I think the biggest lesson to learn from a story like this that we always put the spotlight on a player or individual in any field that takes some huge ridiculous risk and it works, but the the untold story is the countless other people out there that think they should put it all on the line and it fails. I don't think you are a bad person for taking crazy degenerate risk, but it is objectively a stupid decision unless you know for a fact that some other rich backer will save you from your highly likely failure.

The term gambler's ruin is a statistical concept expressed in a variety of forms: The original meaning is that a persistent gambler who raises his bet to a fixed fraction of bankroll when he wins, but does not reduce it when he loses, will eventually and inevitably go broke, even if he has a positive expected value on each bet. Another common meaning is that a persistent gambler with finite wealth, playing a fair game (that is, each bet has expected value zero to both sides) will eventually and inevitably go broke against an opponent with infinite wealth. Such a situation can be modeled by a random walk on the real number line. In that context it is provable that the agent will return to his point of origin or go broke and is ruined an infinite number of times if the random walk continues forever. The result above is a corollary of a general theorem by Christiaan Huygens which is also known as gambler's ruin. That theorem shows how to compute the probability of each player winning a series of bets that continues until one's entire initial stake is lost, given the initial stakes of the two players and the constant probability of winning. This is the oldest mathematical idea that goes by the name gambler's ruin, but not the first idea to which the name was applied. The most common use of the term today is that a gambler playing a negative expected value game will eventually go broke, regardless of betting system. This is another corollary to Huygens's result.

I know a lot of players that lost everything because they was trying to follow an agressive BRM plan. That's very sad, because some of them got into a lot (a lot!) of debt. In fact, some of them had their entire life completely affected because of that decision. This is not an exaggeration. I understand that nobody can take responsibility for someone else's decision... But, in my opinion, professional poker players should be more sensitive and strive to show good examples to the beginning players, at least in the BRM subject matter. Again: nobody can take responsibility for someone else's decision, but professional poker players should think more about this: they already have a great skill-level to do good decions in game, and they usually have enough experience to understand how variance works. Therefore, they have more solid reasons to think about taking an agressive plan or not. On another hand, a new (frequently) doesn't have so much technique-skill yet and doesn't have a lot of experience with variance. What happens in practice is that they're not winning so much playing even cheaper games, see these cases of agressive shots and "feeling to play" thing working out and decided to do the same thinking that they'll play better against better players (?). Anyway, I think we're in 2019, we already have the mathematical and statistical proof of what variance can do and we should talk about BRM in a more serious and mature way. Even in 2019 I do not believe this issue is discussed with the seriousness required. Congratulations to do that, mate. You're great.

I think something can be said about taking shots when you’re young and have a good support system behind you. Nothing like putting half your roll on the table (especially at an mtt!!), but when you’re young sometimes you can afford to lose some and move down to rebuild or hit that 1/10 shot of crushing and your BR skyrocketing. I can understand not wanting that risk the older you get with more responsibilities and things to take care of, but when you have that fire and desire to get better and climb stakes it’s probably not awful as long as you move down when you lose and rebuild with discipline.

The Kelly Criterion says, at some point adding variance just becomes minus EV. Playing with half your roll on a tournament, even if you have edge, clearly is, he got lucky, good for him that's poker. 😁

If you're not willing to lose half ur BR taking a shot then you might as well have a bankroll half as big. Therefore, the other half is spendin' money. Therefore you can spend half ur bankroll on one tournament (if u want) and it's not bad BRM

Thats true but he also mentioned that he did that because it was "interesting" for him due to fiscal reasons. I mean, Jens is a pretty smart guy maybe he was a bit of a degen growing up but I think you have to be like that to play the HS of poker. Bryn case is a bit different, basically is super degen but hey is good that it worked out well for him so far.
