Just a tip about your brakes. If the lever has ever been replaced it is possible that the lever is just holding the piston of the master cylinder in a tiny bit. This cause two issues #1 if the system is already bled and you just charge a lever, the pressure will not bleed off when you release the lever and it eventually pumps up so hard the brakes will lock up. Issue #2 it will almost be impossible at times to bleed an empty system. Check that when the lever is fully released there is a tiny bit of free gap between the piston face and the lever. Not saying this is your issue for sure but I’ve seen it a lot

It’s funny, we’ve had a Lakota for a “community bike” for about 10 years now, it’s been ridden by tons of people, absolutely abused and even had a lil bit of nitrous sprayed through it. It’s been forced to do donuts for hours, burnouts, it’s had 4-5 people on it at a time. It’s sat outside in the snow, in the rain, in the sun, and still immediately fired up. I am absolutely convinced you can’t kill one of these.

Love the videos man I expecially love this one because growing up I had a little Suzuki Ozark 250 and a family friend had a Kawasaki Mojave and it was really how I learned to drive clutch and honed a lot of my skills. I also didn't think the Kawasaki was going to have a lot of power cuz my 250 Suzuki was a lot bigger than it and it had more displacement but the Mojave was surprising. And needless to say it put my Suzuki in the dust. I too was surprised by a little Kawasaki sport. It had shaved fenders nerf bars pro circuit exhaust it was done up really well and it was surprising if the power that it had. Great video

Man, my uncle Vince had a Lakota with the racks on it and he used to ride with my dad and I all the time. They are freaking STOUT quads for a recreational trail quad man. He was 350lbs and as a bone stock machine it took him EVERYWHERE we went. That pipe might have added a couple ponies, but I promise that in complete stock form they absolutely are torque monsters. Back then I used to either ride my old race ready blaster that I raced XC on or I would ride my dad’s Polaris Trail Blazer. We never raced the 3 against each other, and ive owned a 300EX as well, but I feel like in a drag race the trail blazer will be the winner because it’s just “push the gas and go”, no gears to waste time shifting through.... BUT, I’m the trails, the matchup is going to be so freaking close that it’s going to be really hard to judge a winner. My prediction will be that the blaster will be able to pull the fastest time in the woods because of its nimble handling and explosive acceleration. The trail blazer COULD win if you can keep the speed up and don’t have issues with how wide it is, that will be the widest machine out of all 3, but the suspension is not really the best for any kind of racing. The Lakota will be the hill climb king, it just has the craziest torque. I feel like the 300EX will just depend on how skilled the rider is because that will be down on power compared to all 3, but it does have a clutch that can be used to gain torque to the wheels if needed. I’m going to list them as Blaster first, Trail blazer second, Lakota 3rd, and 300EX last for overall results. Drag race will be the trail blazer first, blaster second, Lakota 3rd, and 300ex last. On hills the Lakota will be first, blaster second, trail blazer 3rd, and 300EX last. In a time tripe woods race I feel like the blaster will be 1st, trail blazer second, Lakota 3rd, and 300EX last. A wheelie competition the 300EX will be the best because it’s the smoothest and easiest to control the power, Lakota will be second, blaster 3rd, and good luck wheelieing as trail blazer lol. That figure 8 yeah race the trail blazer has the width and will probably win... now, with all that said, in an XC race it will come down to skill. All 4 machines are VERY VERY CLOSE. The order that I placed them in will be by very small margins, but the blaster will have the advantage because of how nimble it is and the power to weight ratio. I would recommend removing the front fenders on the blaster while competing ONLY BECAUSE it is so small that the bars will hit your knees. When you finally build it into a full blown race quad you’ll need a +2 or +3 stem and ATV mid bend bars MINIMUM to keep the bars off of your knees if you are any taller than my height (5’8”). If the front fenders are removed and the bars rocked forward like you did to the Lakota then all of you might have an easier time winning just about anything on the blaster. My last thing I have to say is that if you put an exhaust on the Lakota then it’s only fair to run at least a DG exhaust on all 4 machines to make it even with the exhaust since you already have the DG exhaust for the Lakota and are doing the same with the tires.
@MichaelSabo
Жыл бұрын
Chris it's awesome to hear your breakdown and predictions being as you've owned or run all of the machines in the competition; it's surprising that so many people are picking the TB to win in the drag race, but then again, I've never really ridden one. All of the machines will have aftermarket exhaust! FMF on the blaster, Sparks on the 300EX and I'm not sure what Pete Hager is putting on the TB but he did buy a system for it.
@christopheravery5808
Жыл бұрын
@@MichaelSabo the biggest advantage the trail blazer will have is not having to let off to shift. The 300EX is a damn good machine for a lot of people but it’s not really a “winner” unless you throw money at it, kind of like a 400EX. That’s what Honda is known for though, building well rounded machines for the masses and a few people will unlock their full potential. The blaster was built to race back in the day, it was the starter machine for many many racer back then. There is a reason they still have a “blaster class” in many series. The Lakota was built as a sport utility machine. It’s not a machine that crushes other machines on a track, but it’s such a good trail machine that it’s hard to deny that it is a very capable machine for a weekend warrior/trail rider. I’m very interested to see this match up man.

Hey Michael I just purchased a 02 Lakota myself! I came across one with a little love needed and your in depth videos gave me the courage to purchase! Its in great shape but the foot shifter is stripped. Im worried if the splines on the shaft are the issue. It also has a small oil leak right in that area... Once the new shifter is installed if it still wont grip what should my next route be? whats so dumb is i tried to rig the stripped one to shift and i have it stuck in first! i dont want to strip the shaft any further so im not attempting to turn it on and get it in neutral until the new shifter arrives. This is my first quad since a small child and humbly I do not have a lot of experience with the mechanics of a four wheeler.

the shift shaft needs to be replaced. With a tight budget I decided to tac weld a Bayou shifter because the jaws are alot shorter, this made it so I could weld it flush with the shaft making it an easy grind off when I have the coin for a proper repair.. Im dealing with an oil leak bc of a hair line crack in the engine.. Facebook Market is really something. Im going for a high heat JB weld epoxy mixture to slow down the leak. damn it really took the wind out of my sails dealing with this.. Any advice?

This is a good point; may replace the lines regardless.

Lakota, if it runs anything like a Mojave. Had one in the early 90’s, was fast as hell for a 4 stroke. Still have my 250X of the same vintage, the original version of the 300EX. The X will out-handle the Kawi but never could touch it in a straight line.

It's been a while since I've ridden a Mojave, but I'd say the Lakota is similar in performance, maybe a tad slower in the upper RPMs. Definitely a sleeper.

What about clutch adjustment? I was waiting on that. I chopped of a lot of steal off mine and lowered it. Fun for drifting. Been waiting to hear on how shifting is after adjustment

Is the piston in the front brake master cylinder stuck all the way in? Or got a shot seal?

All seems to be working fine in the master.

Would be cool to fit a Yamaha Timberwolf in the lineup. I know it’s more utility oriented but I rode one like a race quad as a kid and still own one today.

So, I think I live near your neighborhood and I'm rebuilding a 2002 Yamaha Blaster. I just found out that I have a hole on the stator side. I don't have the tools to repair it. So, I'm wondering if I can send you some pictures to see if you can help me? You are a pro, and I can achily trust someone that I saw do it on other bikes.

You most likely have an electrical draw or a bad battery/bad stator or rectifier. If you have any aftermarket lighting or accesories, I'd start there.

Hey mike man. As far as bleeding those front brakes, it’s a pain. Do you have to bleed the actual master cylinder. Sometimes you can just pump that handle really fast like 1000 times I’m not even exaggerating as many times as you can as fast as you possibly can just keep pumping it with one finger just flicking it almost
@MichaelSabo
Жыл бұрын
I'm hoping I can come up with a better method for bleeding; this isn't the first time I've had this issue - there's got to be a technique or something.

Don’t get me wrong I love the power of my kfx 700 but there is just something about ridding those little 250s and 300s that makes it way more enjoyable then the big fast quads.

I find it crazy that the KX250f has 18 more horsepower(39) than the Lakota while its 40cc smaller. I understand that they're very different machines, but why is it that a KX has so much more horsepower?
@MichaelSabo
Жыл бұрын
KX250F is a much more advanced engine with more advanced timing, compression, intake and exhaust differences, more aggressive cam setup as well as being liquid cooled to dissipate all of the heat generated by the extra performance. It's amazing what changes to an engine can do for performance, however, this Lakota engine will probably outlast any 250F and with less maintenance too. Trade off.
