Our long-range Savage Axis rifle needs one last modification. The Boyds Pro Varmint laminate stock has a raised cheekpiece, but it's not nearly tall enough to get a good cheek weld. With a little foam and Kydex we can make the rifle more comfortable to use.
The materials needed to make this cheek riser were inexpensive. I bought some black Kydex V (recycled Kydex) from Amazon and some velcro straps from a local military surplus store. I used some packing foam for the spacer material.
The tools I used: scissors, tin snips, a utility knife, a sewing machine, a Dremel rotary tool and cutoff wheel, and a heat gun from Harbor Freight. With a coupon, the heat gun cost less than $10.
Adding an inch or so of height to the rifle stock's comb with a cheek rest will make it much more comfortable to use in the next long-range match. I have tested this budget rifle in two 600-yard matches, but we still need to nail down the elusive 1,000-yard match. Unfortunately, the last one was canceled due to thunderstorms. Hopefully Tulsa's Red Castle Gun Club will reschedule.
