That was great, very informative. That roof looks as bad as the roof I have to fix. How would you go about prepping the surface on top if you had to weld on top? There is a seam on my roof that is inches away from a HVAC curb that is leaking.

Thank you for the great video, JcRc! I have a flat roof area on my home that I had covered with PVC roughly 6 years ago. This year we had a leak develop on the inside of the ceiling just below the PVC covered area. The leak developed very close if not below a center catch basin drain pan that is responsible for collecting the majority of rain water that falls on the PVC covered area (roughly 12' x 18') deck just outside the master bedroom. Since there's zero foot traffic on the deck, the leak is most likely due to a weakened seam(s) around or inside the basin, itself. Question: (1.) Would you say this type a repair is beyond the skills of your typical D-I-Yselfer homeowner? (2.) Is the only way to spot leaks on a PVC roof is by Infrared detection? (3.) Would it just be cheaper to replace the entire PVC around the drain and, say, 2 ft around the perimeter of the drain? Thank you for your help!

champy I'm sorry I didn't respond to you. This tutorial was actually created to show contractors the protocol required for the university I am employed by for PVC roof repairs to ensure continuity and quality assurance. I had no idea that there would be any public views. I hope you found a solution for your problem.

you left the damaged membrane and then did an insufficient weld.... You can weld to 20 year old roofing, it's more difficult and riskier. I like the fact you did a weld on the underside, but I hate that it is the only video of this I can find and it is done wrong enough to visually notice issues.

You scare me on so very many levels. A single pass weld, leaving the scared surface untouched, your probing procedures. Just so much. I dearly hope you replaced the roof or did a top patch after. It is impossible for you to have done a proper width weld with your tip at that angle on PVC. And looking at the weld, I'm not even sure it would stand up to an actual probe/seam tester. At least you explored an area no one else does, a blind patch/underside weld etc. But scary stuff.
