The whole bucket on top of the head move seemed kind of silly, but it was a very smart misdirection. Jackson was already exhausted and took the bait. Perhaps that misdirection is more "ninja" than throwing a throwing star. Love this scene. Joe could have ended that fight several times over, chocking Jackson out with the hose for instance, but instead he gave Jackson every opportunity to get his aggression towards Joe - and the frustration over the loss of his buddies - out of his system, until he literally had no fight in him anymore, only appreciation for the grace Joe had shown him. Easily the best scene in all of the movie.

It's an impressive display of judo but I'm not sure why they're throwing ninjas into it. Judo is derived from jiujitsu which is actually the oldest martial art in japan. Jiujitsu is indisputably going to be better if your job is assassinating people. Judo on the other hand resembles greco-roman wrestling, which is historically tested to be the best martial art to know if you're carrying a sword. I think this dude is acting like a samurai

Great comment! That's what I think, too. People complain that Joe and Jackson friendship is too sudden - you know, Joe won and just because of this Jackson forgave him. No, that's not like that. You wrote perfectly why Jackson changed his mind. I'll only add two things: 1. Look at Joe face when Jackson accuses him of being "glory boy" who killed people. He clearly is hurt and maybe blames himself a little over death of fellow soldiers. Jackson sees it, too ("Yeah, you understand what I'm saying") and in this moment he changes his opinion about Joe (a little, but still). 2. When Jackson is on the ground, Joe gives him a hand. It wasn't necessary. He was a winner. He could just brag how badass he is. But he didn't. He was humble, he gave a hand to a guy who wanted to wreck him and who was clearly worse fighter than him. He could just spat at him... at yet he showed him respect. He was even a little awkward. So clearly he wasn't "glory boy", but lonely, kinda awkward, mysterious guy, who just wanted do a good thing.

Looking back on first two American Ninja films as a adult, Steve James really is the best thing in them, by far the most charismatic and best actor in them. He's a little underused in the first one that's why the second one is my favourite. As you have more James in it and he gets to have some cool action set pieces in it. Him and Michael Dudikoff, work off well with one another.

There was allegedly a lot of friction between steve and Michael. Steve allegedly objected to Michaels lack of martial arts skills. You can see it in this scene. He uses a lot of simple (what I assume is ) judo /aikido moves. Though I always found the bucket move kind of cool.

@@johnnyguitar6639 IMO Joe's moves are great. He doesn't want to kill Jackson, he mainly tries to evade him and use his power against him. He sees him as a fellow soldier and doesn't want to fight him, so he just uses this soft moves. Jackson is pissed off and wants fist fight. Joe just wants get over with it, but we clearly see how much better fighter he is - from the beginning this fight is just not fair for Jackson and Joe know it. IMO it's good writing and shows personalities of these characters.

@@johnnyguitar6639Steve James also was a serious actor too as well as a martial artist. He was in John Sayles and William Friedkin films. A bit like Michael Jai White has the same vibe too, people forget he can seriously act too without martial arts invovled. Jai White also had issues with actors who weren't martial artists. You just can't really go full on in a scene with someone who just isn't trained well in Martial arts. You have to be careful with every move. I could understand James having issues if it's true. Michael isn't the greatest actor but him and James have good chemistry in the second film especially.

Michael Dudikoff could have been a pretty good actor if he was chosen for some other starring roles other than ninja movies back then. Even though he only said a few words in this scene, his calmness in the face of basically being verbally assaulted is very powerful. Steve James did everything he could to provoke a fight but Dudikoff tried walking away and finally took action when hands were put on him. It's that quiet calmness that makes you wait in anticipation of the beat down that's coming.
