Hello. What you've described is very very basic stuff that really won't get you far even for an entry level spot. You've gotta go deeper than that. I'd say get an A+ and Network+ certs as a start and go from there. So are you not going to get a job in criminal justice?

Hey, new subscriber here. I just wanted to say thanks. I've got my first interview tomorrow for an Entry Level job, and this video along with another one just gave me a boost of confidence. I've been thinking about changing my major to networking, and I think I might just do it. How would you recommend getting a entry-level job in IT without a college degree? Most kob postings list a educational requirement of a bachelor's degree. I'm a college student working on a medical degree but would like to try IT. I have minimal IT experience for example: POS, data entry and some trouble shooting. ... What is your recommendation?
@learnitfromwilliam
9 жыл бұрын
ahurst1989 Hello and thank you for the question. Yes most companies do list a requirement of some type of education whether it be an AS/AA or bachelors degree. However, most that list a bachelors really don't require it so don't let that get in the way of applying. I guess the real question to you is: Do you want to pursue I.T. or Medical? Obviously that's two different paths with completely different school curriculum's. That's where I would focus right now. Decide which path to go for otherwise you're wasting time in school. And, if you're studying for the medical field, shouldn't you be focused on getting an entry level job in that field? I hope this makes sense.

Hi I'm a computer system engineer, I'm from venezuela, I'm thinking of moving to usa for better chances for work. I´ve certified recently as ccna. I'm very interested about working as IT administrator but I don't have any experiencie. I've studied for over 9 months in a networking academy and I have the skills about set up routers, switch. I know that ccna is the first level in the world of networking. so what do you think, what chances do I have for getting a it job?

Hello. So you just have the certification but no real world experience? We all have to start somewhere so I would just start applying. Does the school you attended have a job placement program? Hello Ravi. I can't tell you if you're ready for the job or not, only you know what you're capable of. But if you studied for the CCNA, then it means you have a pretty good idea about how networking works that includes routing/switching. So if this is your first job, and its entry level, take it.

Hi William, Thank you so much for the in-depth information about working in IT. I just moved to New Orleans area to live with a family member who got a new job working for an Oil Company. I have a few friends in IT in different parts of the country that are tremendously successful. My question to you is that I have a Bachelor of Science in Communications and it hasn't helped me land a job very well. I would like to know if doing Network Cabling would be a good starting point and how I could maybe get some hands-on experience with working a Support or Help Desk job? (most of them on Indeed require some experience) A friend of mine told me to search for a Business Analyst job which may not require as much IT experience. I am very in love with the idea of continuing my education from online resources on programs like Ruby and Python, but I know that I'm not likely to get hired without an IT degree with enough knowledge in software. Please if you know of any resources I could use for learning more about getting into these entry-level jobs suggested in the video (free classes, books, or other information), I would greatly appreciate any advice from an expert in the field such as yourself. I am working part- time valet parking for a hotel and it is not so glamorous especially with my degree. Thank you for all your knowledge and online presence! I'm always trying to network with other people around this new area too. I currently use codeacademy.com and RubyonRails and just KZitem videos to learn new things. Sorry for the long message.

+beastydude123 Hello and Thanks for the question. My first question is why aren't you working in the field that you studied for and have a degree in? Did you change your mind? (LOTS of ppl do) The degree probably won't get you an I.T. job, but it looks great on a resume. And the reason is because an employer will always value a bachelors of any kind. It also means that when you do find a job in I.T., you can use those skills your acquired from the degree in the current job role. Obviously, communication is huge in every area of life. Who knows, you may end up as a manager one day. (just brainstorming) Now, to get your foot in the door in the I.T. world, you first have to identify which area of I.T. that interests you. By the looks of it, you're interested in programming? If so, getting a cabling job probably won't help much. And it's a very physical/labor intensive job, unless you like climbing up/down ladders and through ceilings, etc...There's one positive to that job. You work with IT people and it's a great opportunity to network and make contacts in the industry for future opportunities. But I think you're on the right path with the resources you're using for self study. Some are paid and some are free. Udemy.com is also another great one. Hope this helps!

Thanks and I saw in one of your previous videos about working for Cisco Networking and I think that might be something I could do. I've been looking at Certification prices on their website and it may be a better path for me to work. I can always do programming as a side project and I totally agree cabling would be labor-intensive and probably wouldn't help me too much. It's fantastic what you're doing for this community. I.T. has many opportunities and it can be so complex and confusing looking at all of these different career paths.

+Information Technology Q & A Show (William C) Thanks for Replying William. In regards to Freelancing, at first I didn't think much of it because I thought that a couple of solid apps in the market created by myself would be resume blockbuster items. Later on other websites I found out that people who enter the field as entry level developers struggle because they don't have structure. In other words, when it comes to following client's guidelines on how the apps should look and behave, they are not able to cope. I believe that has a lot to do with the first couple of steps in SDLC if I'm not mistaken. I hope that in future episodes that you could shed more light on this. Currently now I'm finishing up my Bowling3D game and at the same time started up a freelancing project. In regards to what you explained about "reaching out to people", I currently am employed at Fry's Electronics as an electronics merchandiser, which is great and all that I'm working, but I'm not loving it for a Gazillion reasons. First of all there are no programming jobs that I could move up into. Second of all there is no one there who remotely understands anything about programming, so I can't interface with anybody there. Any interfacing that needs to be done is all outside. Out of 100 customers who enter Fry's not more than 1% actually are in the programming industry. Whenever I get an opportunity to meet and probably exchange phone numbers I have to do something else or handle other customers. In regards to nailing the job interviews, there are two possibilities that I could think of off the top of my head that could be going wrong with the interview. One possibility is that I don't have the solid work experience that they are looking for, and second is that I may not be focusing on answering their questions adequately enough because I blank out or something. In case one, I feel that if I don't have the work experience that they are looking for then why would they call me for the interview and wasting both of our times? In case two, I believe that no matter how much I prepare myself before the interview, it always backfires on me. One by one each requirement that they list I rehearse, so to prepare for any questions that they may ask. Mind you, with only a couple of days to prepare, from the moment the recruiter lets me know about the interview to right before interview, that task is not that easy because there are lots to go over and I try not to wait to the last minute. I feel that if I know more theory then it might help my situation a bit. However, I'm the type of person that once I start on a project, I'm fine by myself. If I need help I know the resource and where to get it online. So to learn the theory of Android programming is to me seems pointless, am I not correct? The main focus is practice, practice, and more practice and everything else should and possibly will fall into place. So for example, in a previous interview they asked me what is a static variable or function and how is it used. That should have been the easiest question that any entry level programmer should have been able to answer. Even on this question, I messed up because I know what the static variable or function is because I use it all the time in my programs, but I answered the question in a way that wasn't satisfactory to them because it wasn't the answer that they were looking for and then I blank out. I notice about myself one thing in regards to theory and that is if I have to teach about Android programming to somebody else, then I can do well with that. However if I am asked random even simple questions, then I crash and burn badly. I don't know how to correct this??? Thanks for hearing me out, William

It depends on what path you want to follow in I.T. An assoc and some certs will get you started. But if you want to get into computer engineering or science, then that requires a 4yr degree.

I wish it were that way but unfortunately most companies like to see higher education even though it really doesn't mean much for most of us. Certifications as well. I'm really hoping that companies wake up and realize that for most of the jobs in I.T. do not require 4 yr degrees and such. Obviously if you want to be a high end engineer, then a computer science or computer engineer degree is needed (just an example). But Experience is the key.

I got interested in IT by seeing how successful my cousin got. He works at Netflix as a system analyst and makes big $$$. My question is, what should i be teaching myself? so far i have been learning Ubuntu. I also don't have a GED or college degree, i had to dropout to take care of my sister, but if i got a couple certifications (microsoft, cisco, etc..) will that help me get an IT job?
@learnitfromwilliam
9 жыл бұрын
+Mike Banston Hello Mike. The first question you have to answer is what area of IT interests you. Then you figure out which certifications/education you'll need. You mentioned Ubuntu which is a linux platform. If that interests you, there are certainly certification paths you can follow. I'm assuming you have a computer to mess around with? That's a good start always. Have you seen my video where I break down the different areas of I.T.? That might help you. As for the certs, I don't think that not having a high school diploma / GED will matter. Nobody puts that on a resume anyway and I don't think employers even ask. The only problem it would pose is if you wanted to go to a college which I believe requires one or the other. So in your case, just getting certifications should be fine because those are self-study and anyone can take an exam. Thanks for the question!

Hey sir I'm currently a bit undecided in which path in IT to study due to crazy comments that I've been seeing. It's either ICT or the field of Network security, and also is it worth staying in school all the way to my MBA because i dont mind doing it im only 18.
@learnitfromwilliam

Hello. What is ICT? Network security is a good path also. Going to college is always a big question and since you're 18, I'm guessing your parents are probably telling you to do so. (like most do). I'm not going to tell you NOT to go to college and get a degree but it also depends on what you want to do in the future. An MBA is after a BA so first get a BA and then decide if you want to continue. An MBA in the IT world will get you into management if that's what you want.

The68VeeDub So you have no experience at all? If you're indeed in a big city or nearby, there HAS to be entry level jobs. It may not be the job you want, but we have to start at the bottom unfortunately in this field. I started at the very bottom in 1999 making $8 an hour doing very basic tech support. You just have to be willing to stick it out if you really want to get into the field. It's not easy, I know, but nothing worthwhile is easy. Did you watch the newer version of this video where I talk more about this topic? This specific video here was my first one but the later one went into more detail on finding entry level (gave ideas, etc). Are you actually getting the interviews or getting denied before that?
@Road2PBATour
8 жыл бұрын
No i'm not kidding just go on indeed.com search help desk in winston-salem NC and just look how many job postings want for an entry level tier 1 help desk. Requirements are bachelors degree plus 2-3 years of in field experience. I've got an associates to find out it's basically worthless. See I work full time as a security officer and have been for the past 6 and half years making 9.65 so I've never made over 10 dollars at any job I've ever had. That's the reason money isn't the issue it's the dumb employers that want way too much in requirements and puts me out of getting a job. I've even interviewed at Time Warner Cable and they weren't interested in hiring me. Even though I have Cisco routing and switching classroom and wireless experience. Even the internships around my area require you be in a bachelor degree program or have a bachelor degree.

You're giving up too quick and making excuses. You're probably not getting hired because your resume has nothing on it except your security position. You need to change that! There's no reason you can't find something in that area. You're not in the boonies like alot of other people. Something as simple as a computer tech at best buy (geek squad) for example. Get a job pulling cable (cat5, ca6, fiber, etc). It's labor intensive but you're in the game at least and exposed to technology. Volunteer at a college or non-profit doing basic computer work. This is all stuff I talk about in the video's. I'm not trying to be a hardass, but from what I'm reading so far in your comments, you need some guidance. So hopefully you don't take this personally.

I'm not going for the money, I just want a better job than manufacturing where I'm at while going to college.

Information Technology Q & A Show I'd like to ask you, Do you think a Comptia Network certificate or a CCNA, do either one equals a Networking Associate Certificate from a community college ?

You will learn more from CCNA/Network+ than what you will get in college!

Romeo Migisha yeah kind of, te professor actually suggest us to get certified so that we compare our knowledge and backup even more the claim of having these skills.

Sorry Kevin, I never saw this comment. The CCNA is a great certification to have if you can pass it. It's not easy but will get you on the right path to a networking position and since it's Cisco, the name itself is an advantage. So I would agree with Romeo.
