Thank you Wizard for letting everyone know not to run away from older Mercedes-Benz vehicles. I caught the "Mercedes Bug" several years back when needing to buy a reliable vehicle "on the cheap" and saw that the 97 C230's that were just out of warranty were cheaper than the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry of the same year! Fast forward 8 years now and its it's got over 200K miles on it and zero major problems. Since then, I've added the GL450 Sport Wagon (all wheel drive SUV with the airmatic suspension) and most recently bought my wife the 2012 E550 Cabriolet with the Sport package which is a beast of a luxury convertible car!! Once you learn to tackle the maintenance, buy quality parts and fluids (Mercedes requires special coolant and transmission fluid for example or you'll literally blow a head gasket or your transmission) it ends up being a well engineered, reliable car that is the envy of the neighborhood!!

I remember once I had to pick up a replacement part for a customer's brand new (barely 200 mi on the car) SL500. It was just the wooden bezel that wrapped around the center stack and shifter. This was around 2005 when they had adopted the more rounded body style for the new models. I went to a dealership in South Atlanta, and that single piece was $1200. I was floored. I got the parts guy to give us the old industry discount, so it was $850 out the door. Still, I thought that was a ton of money, even if it was real wood with a beautiful lacquered finish. I wondered how long that white leather interior stayed clean in that car. Beautiful stitching and perforated leather, with like a high quality football pebble grain to it. I think that car was nicer inside than some lambos and ferraris from that era that I had been in.

That's so weird. I was looking at that car thinking, *_"I wonder if that's my old TR8?"_* But no. I sold a Pharaoh Gold 1981 TR8 to a guy who owned a Oklahoma City Electrical Parts shop in 2012. At the time it was the lowest mileage TR8 in the world. I also owned a 1980 TR8. It was my daily for 8 years. There's a part of the ignition system inside the distributor that gets hot & causes the engine to shut off. It starts again when it cools, but most TR8's have had this part replaced with aftermarket ignition systems. A design problem with TR7 & 8's is there's no depression in the monocoque for the wiring bundle. Over time it chafes against the carpet and you get shorts. This was a design oversight which was to be addressed in the next refresh.

I will say after working on and E46 and E90 BMW's and an E83 I can say that working on my in laws 03 C240 4matic has been pretty easy/simple in comparison. Mercedes-Benz cars also seem better built - where as BMW and Audi use plastics everywhere (valve covers e.t.c.) this Mercedes had aluminum valve covers and was real easy to do a valve cover gasket job ... no stupid PCV placement or oil traps don't have to completely remove the main wiring harness that routes through both ends of the vehicle. Newer BMW's are just Junk riding on a Badge name (nothing more than fashion statement) don't care how much power they make or how fast they can go.

Hate to point out that you got the history messed up. Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz independently produced the cars during the same year, 1886. They had no idea about each other even though they were 60 miles apart in Canstatt and Mannheim respectively. Karl Benz received a patent on his car, making it a "first" passenger car (even though there were self-propelled vehicles in the past). Karl Benz was so petrified about selling his cars and refused to sell them. In 1888, his wife, Bertha, was so frustrated and decided to "steal" his car for a world's first ever long distance road trip with her sons. Karl Benz was convinced afterwards and went ahead with selling his cars. Gottlieb Daimler finally started selling his cars in 1892. In 1899, Emil Jellinek, a wealthy Austrian diplomat and automotive entrepreneur, commissioned cars with heavily modified engines for motor races. The engines were to be more durable and wouldn't explode or fail during the races. The first of Daimler racing cars was delivered to Mr Jellinek in 1900, and they were called Mercedes 35hp, named after his daughter, Mercédès. The racing success of Mercedes 35hpin 1901 led to the dramatic increase in recognition and sales of Daimler cars. The public associated Mercedes more with the racing success so Daimler registered a trademark for the name, Mercedes, in 1902 and would sell its cars under that new name only. In 1926, Daimler and Benz merged to become Daimler-Benz AG. The vehicles produced by the newly merged company were to be called Mercedes-Benz to this day.

AMATEUR QUESTION please : Why would a harmonic balancer need to be replaced ? Is this not just a fixed weight/ dimension item ? What wears out ?

Mr Wiz… thoughts on the Bluetecs? Got a 2011 ML350 Bluetec, it routinely turns in 32mpg at 70mph, has 120,000 on it and so far, so good. I’m concerned about how much crap the engine is taking in via the EGR system. Thoughts on deleting?

OMG don't even get me started on Mercedes harmonic balancers. We have 2 Sprinters each with almost 500k miles both currently running without harmonic balancer weights (obviously the crank pulley is still there, just with the weight torn off). The factory one must've easily lasted 250k while these cheap replacements mechanics keep putting on are almost guaranteed to fall off by the next oil change. Pro tip to anyone in South Florida/Ft Pierce area, avoid Sprinter City like the plague. They charged us 10k to put a "new" engine in that had the SAME EXACT ISSUES AND BEHAVIOURS as the previous one. Not only that, they left half of the bolts off the oil pan and spliced and respliced a perfectly okay wire that WASNT CUT OR TORN AT ALL before it went to them. We usually do our own maintenence but have gone to them for harm balancer replacements before, they always fall off within 10k

@@lexsarrasin713 You would be correct! A 2004 SHC with 423k miles and a 2005 SHC with 480k miles. I personally have a 2006 140" HC that we've been resurrecting. That's all extremely sound advice and I had a hard time finding things we don't do/have already done or looked at to keep these beasts happy and rolling. Very recently we had a high pressure fuel pump fall apart on us but tightening the bolts made it happy again, still going. We're about to pull glow plugs out of my 2006 to perform a compression test on it . This time we bought Doran harmonic balancers, I don't believe they're upgraded but they were expensive so hopefully these will be much better.

Wizard I have a w164 ml500. How do u change front struts without removing axles on 4matic. Also, at 190k miles do u think it will be a reliable car much longer? Already changed a failed fuel pump and crank position sensor. Bunch of oil on engine, ps fluid too.

LOL, TR8 - British Leylands finest 70's junk from an era where assembly line workers spent more time on strike than building cars. At least it has the Buick V8 I guess, they aren't too bad. Owned a string of Triumph's in my late teens & early 20's - I have no fucking idea why now as they all caused me nothing but stress and grief. I guess I learned to wrench on them at least.

what you said, any mercedes you keep on the road after its 10 years old cost 2 a 3 k a year: thats not so for a lot of mercs i think, i had a e220 cdi from 03, an drove 18k miles a year, and over 5 years it costs me about 1 a 1.5k a year. now i drive a 2008 c klasse 180K and in 2 years and 25k miles i only spent 700e

Re the TR8: Probably one of the leads coming from the ignition switch has been rubbing on something under the dash and has finally worn through. If so could be, probably will be, a pain the botty to sort as there is little room under there. A nice car though but I prefer my 6 and XJ-S.

With the reputation that generation of britsh cars has i think i would spend the money and pull dash and just start over with a whole new harness, especially if he gets under the dash and it looks like "bubba" has took a few shots at working on it over the years.
