It's always great to see your personal comments: informative and comic. I've always been a fan or yours and JT. It was at Mt Snow that while in the lead of the pro race he had a mishap with a spectator and ultimately lost use of his front brake. He continued in the race and came in 5th without a front brake on a notoriously technical course. He was an incredible athelte and his battles with the "lung" were classic mtg ing. Now his son is a pro motor cross racer. Very impressive family. I'm 6'3' and I'm presently riding 180 cm cranks. What's length guys my size use as pros? Thanks, and keep up the good work.

Great channel, Bobke! I usually try to talk to someone that I've caught up with and starts sitting on my wheel. I've met some great people this way and even had coffee bought for me if they've been in the 'hurt locker' and I've towed them home. In an interesting recent interview with Lizzie Armitstead, she said she works harder with someone sitting on her wheel. I'm sure it's frustrating for her being so recognizable in the rainbow stripes of world champ. Keep coming with the great stories!

Fun one Bobke! I'm an older rider so catching anybody and being able to pass is a rare event. But, when I do catch and sit in to recover I then try and take my turn pulling, and I try to do that by not lifting the tempo either. Most of the time the rider I caught is not fast enough to stay with me, even though my pace is well below anything that would be described as quick, let alone fast. (Think old fattsh cubical-dwelling engineer). When other riders catch me which is often, but on that rare day sit on my wheel, I don't mind. I try to maintain a steady pace, not lifting, and even try to remember to call out obstacles on the road. Usually with like minded folks we end up with a few minutes chat until our routes diverge.

We had a local tag onto Shanna Armstrong in the Belgium Forests during '07 LeTourUltime, for an hour with his knees sticking out on the upstroke, until his phone went off and he pulled over, very fun to include him during what turned into a World Champion endurance ride NonStop!!!

This has happened a lot to me recently in Southern California when especially training in zone 2 which is a 180 W for me. People latch on and I waved them through but they don't go through. So I've started spitting or blowing snod without looking then they drop back and do not come up and try it again for sure

It was on a triathlon race. Drafting was forbidden and a guy I knew was sitting on my wheel so I asked him if he was going to bye a ticket for the ride. He asked in return what was my drink . I told him. He hanged for one more kilometer then let me go on. Same evening that particular drink mastika ( close to ouzo ) materialized on my table. As you see some wheel suckers are appreciative folks.

I'll ride with a local club. And all too often I get the campers on my wheel and when I ask or signal for them to come up then I get excuses " I don't have my legs yet" " I don't know the route" etc...and when they take the front they go obnoxiously slow. So then I turn it into a training ride and make them pay by keeping a fast pace basically to shag them off, in which I get stronger so kind of a win win in that situation.

Interesting topic. I feel like when cycling was less popular and cyclist were more of a fringe activity at least in America, group rides were far more civil and people took turns at the front. There was more of a sense of shared suffrage. Do you dislike group rides?

On the track, the velodrome, when someone gets your wheel, they announce themselves. They say "on." It gives you information. It's the polite thing to do, to announce your arrival, and it helps me, because I know someone is on my wheel. It decreases the danger to the wheel sucker cause I am not going to sit up on the track. On the road, folks need to pay credo to these track ethics and communication. Announce themselves, to alert you they are back there. If I sat up on the road, not knowing I had a wheel sucker, disaster. I formulated my response to the judge however, "they were tailgating." Ever rode a training ride with with your girlfriend and some weekend warrior thinks it's cool to sit in? Your trying to train and catch up simultaneously. So annoying. They feel entitled. But its actually invasive and dangerous. Ride your ride. If you wanna race, get a license or show up for the Tuesday night group ride.

I am not sure why this is such a highly controversial topic amongst the bike riding community. Personally, I think it's great when someone wants to try and keep up with me. If they want to work with me, even better! Cycling is always better when enjoyed with others and it's a nice psychological motivator to know that someone is on your tail. I've been riding for 20+ years and have yet to see a crash that resulted from "wheel sucking." I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I'm just saying I don't think it's as much of a safety concern as people think. I am way more concerned about vehicles, large animals, potholes, and pedestrians... Simple solution (if it bothers you that much)- slow down, or go faster!
@paulflory3532
6 жыл бұрын
I agree. So what if someone is on your wheel, it will marginally decrease your aero drag so you will go slightly faster with the same effort. Most of the risk is on them: they can't see upcoming hazards well plus will most likely crash if they touch your wheel. And sometimes wheel suckers turn out to be interesting people. But if there is some reason you want to get rid of them, another tactic is to briefly stop pedaling at irregular intervals. That's extremely annoying to a wheel sucker (or to the person behind you in a bona fide pace line) because it signals that you may be about to hit the brakes. You can also ride close by pavement irregularities so that they hit bumps. What is definitely annoying for the front rider is what my ex-girlfriend used to do. She would sit in my draft (fine with me) until I slowed for an intersection to be sure it was clear for both of us, and then she would swoop past me (not fine), and not always on the same side. Super distracting when you are trying to look for cross traffic, adds the element of trying not to run into each other.

Because there is an etiquette to follow and next to know one does. If you want to sit, then say so and it's no problem. If you want to pull then say, "hey you want to work together for a few miles?" Problem is no one does this and it's fucking annoying.
@easyx9mm

It’s a annoying as heck. I don’t mind if someone would ask, can I sit on your wheel? But just free loaders get on my nerves. Also it is a liability ( in this day and age) . Here down South we have a Lawsuit against another cyclist for “causing” a crash. I guess I don’t want to slow down get crashed in to me and have a potential of a lawsuit against me!

It's not quite a very nuanced approach or suggestion that one ... funny yes but doesn't quite get it there these days. Not every ride is a performance ride .. but nowadays recovery is about spinning the lactate from previous heavy days out. The flip on that is THIS: you've spun the crap out of your body ... soreness ... and now you've got some energy ... maybe not 100 ... but not flat at 60 per cent. So a group passes ... but you're not doing rotations with them .. off the back. Yes, with some it's considered an intrusion ... and it's best to keep a little distance ... which with a big enough group of say 6 ... means you can still get a draft benefit. Most group riding is hostile though ... and needs to be seen as such. Unless they are friendly from the off ... don't treat them as friendlies. HBC.
