Excellent review.I'm not into forward (in your face)sounding speakers. So i bought a year ago Q 3030i with Yamaha a-s 501.I was very worry maybe the sound turn out to be too bright for me.Ηappily the sound is laid back.The highs are crystal but not offencive,the mids are warm and revealingly and the bass deep and strong (in my room).In some movies bass gets very low frequencies like a subwoofer!The whole room is shaking!!So i don't have to spend more money for a subwoofer. Like i said i was worry about the synergy between them but Yamaha A-S 501 proved to be a true gem.Far better speakers than wrfs 12.2.

I run my 3030i’s with my old Onkyo mini receiver that has a low 20watt/channel @4ohm. I was surprised how loud I can get the speakers, which is more than enough in my medium sized room. It helps that the 3030i have 88db sensitivity. Make sure you choose an amp that can handle 4ohm, although they can be driven at 6ohm.

I'm so close to pulling the trigger on either these or the slightly smaller 3020i's. I'm building little cardboard mockups tonight to actually look at them in my space because it is such a difficult task to visualize the size/depth across all the youtube vids. That said, I have one dilemma that I am struggling to suss out. Due to some hifi failure/replacement timing problems, I am going to have to underpower these for a few months while my Amp replacement shoebox gets replenished. So, if I am stuck with just a 20Wpc driving these (or the 3020i's) for the next couple months, what is the real outcome of that? Am i just going to be cranking the little thing in order to get a normal listening level with maybe a little thinner presence, or am I going to be met with little if any sound reproduction?
@joentell

Great idea to do a mock-up. Just do a piece at a time. So I always start with the speakers. If you know your amp isn't great, it's exciting to know they'll sound even better once you upgrade. Hi Joe. Looking to get my first system setup. Been watching loads of videos. My room isnt great in terms of speaker placement. It's fairly small and speakers would have to be against the wall. With this is mind, do you think I would be better going for the kanto yu6 with a sub and setting up a 2.1 powered speaker system (better than a soundbar as you've said). My other option I was considering is the q acoustics 3010i 5.1 system with a Denon receiver. I'm just not sure if I will be able to get the most out of the 5.1 system, so would I be better off saving money as the Kanto 2.1 would be half the price in the UK? Any advice would be appreciated. 👍👍
@joentell
4 жыл бұрын
I think with a sub optimal room, an AVR like the Denon with Audyssey room correction can really help with bass response. Then when you decide to add an amp later, it can help blend your sub to your main speakers. The Kanto is a very nice setup, also, but just know you will likely want a MiniDSP 2x4HD, a UMIK-1 calibrated mic, and REW software to really dial in that system. It can sound good without that, but I'm going based on what you said that the room isn't optimal.

I have an odd shaped small to mid sized room but went down the 5.1.2 route (with in ceiling speakers for the height). I specifically wanted Audyssey to help with room correction but it cuts out on the sub part, which is the first thing it goes to measure. The sub starts rumbling, then after about 3 seconds it goes quiet and Audyssey quite literally won't move on from there. No errors. Nothing. I tried a few times and it's the same result. Ended up having to ignore using Audyssey and try to set things up manually. The sub works fine for music and movies, never cutting out, it's just through Audyssey. I don't have a second sub to try unfortunately so I don't know if it's the Denon 3600, the mic or the QA 3060S. The sub isn't the best (it came as part of the 3050i Cinema pack) and I was looking to upgrade to the SVS PB1000 anyway.

@@joentell So, here's where I admit I'm actually using the Aria 906s and have been for a while. They're excellent (if not gigantic) speakers with a really smooth and buttery sound... it reminds me of the LS50s I had before, but without the 'harshness' I found the KEFs to have at points... they also sounded a lot fuller owing to going a lot lower down (I prefer not having a sub when I can, tbh). They work great nearfield due to the very wide horizontal dispersion. My main complaint about the 906 is actually the build quality... or the quality control of it, to be precise. While it *looks* great from a distance, if you do a close up inspection (or use it at a desk) you will find a lot of off-putting things - one of my tweeters wasn't cut so well, so there're white marks on the outer edges, their machine that prints the 'F' Sandwich Technology lettering clearly screwed up as both speakers have an extra ` looking line above the l that's printed on - like some kind of weird accent letter, a small scuff on the one of the ports, and the glass isn't fitted evenly as they're slightly different on both speakers. This stuff got past QC inspections at the factory, and this isn't even made in China. Stuff like that really bugs me, how much do you have to pay for consistent quality control? I could hide it all with the grilles but... that's always a compromise on sound if you really don't have much reason to do that. So I guess I'm still sour over that and always looking for something else to try. Over in the UK the 906s typically retail for 800-900 while the ELAC is 500. Perhaps the Aria has an over designed exterior that would just simply cost too much to reject samples like mine? As for the 3030... I hadn't heard great things about the prior model, but this newer one seems interesting at an even cheaper price point.

@@Tephnos I think with regards to sound quality not build quality, it's more important to have a flat sound signature nearfield because you're really hearing a lot more of the direct sound and less of the reflected sound. Where typical loudspeakers get interesting is how they work with the room. Each company has its own philosophy of how that should be done.

@@joentell Totally fair. I typically tend to avoid overly industrial looking actives at my desk (like Genelec) simply because my room is not a studio, so I'd like the speaker to actually aesthetically fit somewhat (my own form of WAF, I guess). So how the speaker looks is a big deal to me as well as the sound. Thankfully, in this regard, both the ELAC and 3030i look fantastic! ELAC may work better maybe, as I am fairly close to the wall which may agitate the rear port of the 3030i.

Go Harbeth or some of the Falcon Acoustics LS3/5a's then. (Bad influence)

remember that the star of the show is the product you are reviewing not you, so you shouldn't be playing so much with the camera and all those angles. thank you!

I agree, I think those camera angles were not good at all and really distracted me from the video.
