I don't think your wife represents the general Vietnamese women nor did she fully understand the customs. Don't take this the wrong way I just mean she was probably unable to explain to you in fluent English. A dowry is not required when a guy proposes to a girl, especially if both come from a poor family background. Sometimes, the only requirement is a wedding ring, usually a gold ring (which costs around 1000-2000 yuan). The wedding party is also not required if the couple can not afford it. Or a tricky way is to estimate the amount of gift money you'll get from your guests, then deposit a small amount to a wedding hall, and after the party, you can use the gift money to pay the full bill. Usually, dowries are not compulsory, but rich families tend to give expensive dowries to the brides' families to show off their wealth. Certainly, Vietnamese women are still relatively less materialistic than Chinese and Korean women, but I think the trend will be the same in the future. Congratulation to you for getting married and I wish you and your family good luck in the future. I remember vaguely your hometown is Hubei, let show the world your 九头鸟的本事 haha!
