As usual with QI, it depends what you mean when you ask. Four states refer to themselves as commonwealths while the others refer to themselves as states. Colloquially they're all states. Politically they're all equal in status as part of the union, and if that "part of the union" is referred to as a "state" they're all states. I can't think of any actual difference between how commonwealth states and ordinary states operate in the US, so it's just a quirk of the terminology - but _on that basis alone_ it's true. All the other people arguing about it in the comments are claiming it's false on some other basis than the one upon which the question was asked... and may miss the point of QI, a little bit.

A more appropriate question would be “how many states use the word ‘state’ in their official name?” Then you could say 46. 4 states use “commonwealth” instead of “state” in their name. They are still states and there’s still 50 States. It would be like if I named my kid “Prince” wouldn’t make him a prince.

False. Commonwealth is part of the name of these States. They are still States. Kentucky, for instance, not being one of the original 13, was granted statehood by the US government's. It was not granted Commonwealth hood

The Commonwealth thing is pure bullshit and the way the question is asked was how many states were there. It is a poorly researched question . Commonwealths were and are considered states. However, there ARE two former _Republics_ : Texas and California (the "Bear Flag Republic"). They were briefly their own countries before becoming part of the United States. Not to mention the brief reign of Emperor Norton [r.1859-1880] in San Francisco. Massachusetts was originally divided between the Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay colonies before uniting into the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. And two states used to be owned by other states. Maine was originally part of Massachusetts (through the Plymouth colony) and New York. Vermont was originally divided between New York and Massachusetts, with parts owned by New Hampshire.

Yes, the border with N. Carolina has several straight lines, but the entire border is not a single straight line. NJ is also close, but its short border with NY is a single straight line. KY and Mo also have jogs in what appears to be straight line borders with another state.

Stephen Fry also called the Washington Monument "Grant's Tomb" (which is in NYC, BTW), so, let's not be trusting Mr. Fry on matters pertaining to America. What's that? He did a documentary on the US, proclaims himself an expert, and *still can't get the basic facts right?* The hell you say!
