I am very shy, but when I was a teenager I was painfully shy, and by painfully, I mean it was painful for both me and the people who were trying to speak to me. I couldn't speak above a whisper, couldn't make eye contact and I tended to hunch up my shoulders and cover myself with my arms and attempt to hide. I also hated being touched and hated having people come within a meter of me. Anyway, it led this this horrible dance where people would try to talk to me, I would reply so quietly that they stepped closer to hear me better, which made me back away and make my voice go quieter and I would talk to their feet. So then they would get closer and I would get quieter, the number of times I ended up backing into walls and other objects in an attempt to get away from people talking to me... I find it funny now, but at the time is sucked.

I'm not sure why research would have to be done to understand the 'zones'. We need to be able to process potential threats in various degrees of proximity. Having someone very close to you that you don't know or like is 'they're close enough to stab you without you being able to defend.' Anything else is 'how much time do I have to react to a threat?'. The more time, the better. Animals do this all the time. People whom you know and are close to can penetrate the 'zones' at will, once you trust them. That's why the term 'getting stabbed in the back' is nothing more than being attacked by someone you trusted, someone you let in that zone. Enemies don't 'stab you in the back', unless of course they're literally stabbing you in the back.
