Stephen Fry also said in a very early interview that often Alan is one of the most intelligent individuals that appear on the show. He knows how to get a laugh and how to be a foil to Stephen Fry (and other guests). Without a "Common Joe", QI wouldn't be as popular as it is because the audience would just get lost in the technical details that can occur on the show (until Alan or someone like Jo or Rich jump in).

There are out there videos just of Phil. He is so good, I wish it was Phil that was with us every episode. Phil is funny in so many ways, furthermore, he lets others have their moment in the light and does not try to hog the cameras all the time. Like Sean, Phil is talented. I think as a dad he is also great as he has his daughter being one of the Elves.

Kind of terrifying as an image the bit about bats firebombing Japanese cities. Already the firebombings that the Americans did were much more devastating in loss of life and actual area of damage than the nukes. Oh, and in Japanese they have neither r no l, but one sound that kind of goes either way from our perception. When I took Japanese in uni one thing I was taught was to curl my tongue so that the bottom of the tip was touching the roof of my mouth.

In recent times since this show, it has been shown that the mid ocean ridge in the Atlantic is a line of volcanos and on either side of this ridge are these magnetically stratified layers getting older and older the further away from the ridge one gets. The fact that these ridges are stratified magnetically in a N, S,N,S,N,S pattern suggests these ridges were produced either during or just after a pole flip. Einstein at one point tried to calculate the amount of energy required for such a flip it was enormous. The sun flips its poles regularly and seems to have no distinct effect on earth. I gotta wonder if it has something to do with crossing the galactic plane.

To some of the racist remarks about the show: Racism is a unreasonable hatred / fear of a person from another ethnicity. (Can be religion, country etc). Making fun of a stereotype is NOT being a racist. It's just making a joke. Just because the media / someone you know uses the word Racism whenever something about a stereotype/negative about a "race" is mentioned doesn't excuse you for making the same mistake.

if a person is using the speech patterns that are perceived as part of a given race then that has got to be racist, It is the degradation that not just one person feels but that community as a whole. The offence taken surly has got to be the observer to such behaviour. Look at the comics of the past, they would not say they are being a bigot or racist in any way, it is just a joke. I grew up in England during the 70s and it was seen as being OK to have on Saturday night TV the ikes of Bernard Manning and his collection of idiots on TV in an unfunny show called the comedians, I hated it, It was Paddy this as Paddy that, then Sambo this and that. I thought we had become more aware and grown up and put such childish attitudes away, but t seems not. This idiot Davis somehow gets away with Mexican and Mederterainian interpretations of people's accents. It comes to a shallow setting when one to gain a laugh has to use an entire people's culture or how they may sound to the ear. To say that Making fun of a stereotype is NOT being a racist is missing the point, and it is very silly to try and hold such a position. It is always funny to hear him talk about other old comedians like Jim Davidson for his jokes and then he will sit and act the same way. I am sorry this is so long, but it is not always easy to get a point across. Just being able to talk about racism like a mantra is not enough you have to actually believe it and follow such thoughts.

(Although no-one asked me, haha) I never believed him to actually be an idiot; I could see there was a certain 'endearingly ignorant' persona, and obviously set up to juxtapose Stephen's wonderful span of knowledge and relate to the audience. But then again, there would be those who take things at face value or are happy to just play on that and push the persona to its limit. I have the feeling the type of people who watch QI would have a certain awareness of all of this, though.

Daelyas I'm teaching English in Thailand and it is amazing how funny they think we (non-Thais) sound and it is fun to "exchange" accents. It would be weird if we didn't. Surprisingly, there are many Germans here as well (I live in the middle of nowhere that is why it is surprising) and some Thais have German English Accents (so much fun to hear because it is unique) because their English instructor was from Germany. ANYWAY, in Thai when a word has an R in it, like "farang" (foreigner) they roll the R, similarly to Spanish, when they are speaking formally and say "falang" in day to day use. It is similar to how we Americans change Ts to Ds. Example: we tend to pronounce "butter" as "budder" and "better" as "bedder." My Thai students swap Ls and Rs all the time in English, because that is what they do in Thai. Just sharing my experience. Have a lovely day! Tschüss!

Jan-Erik Strøm The R/L issue in Japan is that Japanese uses a separate sound that's almost halfway between the two. The result is that if you're expecting to hear one, it will always sound like they're saying the other.
@Philrc
6 жыл бұрын
There is a reason due to the fact that Japanese ( and maybe Thai etc) doesn't give any phonemic meaning to the difference between the two sounds. They therefore are perceived as having no great meaningful difference if one or the other is used. /l/ and /r/ in those languages are allophones of one sound whereas, of course, for us they are allophones of two two different phonemes.
