I love the Flapjack woman. She looked so genuinly friendly and her courage to ask for a kiss was really adoring. Good for her.

Hindsight is immensely amusing at times - the ONE episode with Rhys Darby and they talk about pirates and rules of pirates. Coincidence it is but that doesn't make it any less amusing.

It wasn't that you weren't allowed to play music on a Sunday on a pirate ship, the rule was that if you asked the ships musicians to play music at any time, they had to. Sunday was the one day when the musicians couldn't be forced to play so that they could have a break.

Some U.S. states do indeed charge inmates in prisons and jails. The state of Virginia definitely does it. They charge inmates a dollar a day on top of the money they are already receiving on behalf of the inmate from the state. It's a form of punishment, even though people are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty when in "jail" (before conviction.) A dollar a day may not seem like much until you're starving (the little bit of food they give is almost inedible) and rely on expensive commissary food that your family sends you money to buy and a dollar a day is deducted from your account.

I don't know how useful this will be unless you're on the run in central Louisiana, but my cousin said you're better off in Livingston or Ascension Parish where they don't charge you for food and let you sleep as late as you want. He said East Baton Rouge's parish jail is a lot harder to get through, even though they let you serve your time "2 for 1" and take two days off your sentence for every one day you behave yourself and don't cause any trouble.

Prisons in the US are different all over the country, and even within states different from one place to another. Some are government-run, and some are government-owned but run by contracted managerial agencies. One of my "black sheep" relatives was telling the family at Christmas where were the best places in the area to turn yourself in if you were wanted for a crime because of the different conditions.

Only the management is privatized. I said as much on the Gifts episode, but they make it sound like our police run around arresting people at random and throwing them in jail. I think the problem is that our prisons don't DO anything to discourage people to get out and not come back, and that the general social attitude to prisoners (and ex prisoners) can be summed up in a few rude words.

That’s one thing which has changed with Fry’s departure. I, who misses him deeply, still think that Sandi Toksvig is the perfect successor to the position of host. And they’ve been inviting many funny women onto the show as well. The person who said “meritocracy” is deluded.

1) how the fuck didn't "my wife" get a klaxon? 2) how very foreshadow-y, looking back from 2023, that, when Rhys Darby appeared in QI, the first question was about piracy, what captains where allowed to do and there was even a book mentioned about sodomy in piracy :D
