I raised one of these gorgeous birds from a baby. She had been washed out of atree along with her mud nest in a storm and her siblings were dead. What a big personality. She was a buddy for awhile, came when I called, then gradually returned to the wild. It was a privilege. The music was awesome.

I hope they’re able to find it. It appears because it sounds lovely and not distressed that it can be misunderstood.

@@zeddybear257 yeah they are not too distressed. It's very normal when the young get to full size like the one here with his parents they start roaming a lot, so the family unit stop and make some calls. If they get desperate they will get high in the trees and spread out a lot and make the calls, but still close enough to hear each other

This is absolutely (at least to my ears, and expectedly) *not* in any standard temperament, but my best approximation of the start of this melody is: Bb - E - F - Eb - Bb - B I'm too tired to transcribe the last couple notes, but that is absolutely wild in how great it sounds despite being so unconventional. Beautiful. Closest thing is the octatonic scale, I guess. Perhaps the birbs are thinking "alternating half-whole steps" but I don't know. Crazy how the very first interval is the "most dissonant" in music: the b5/#4. To anyone not familiar with music theory (I imagine most of this sounded like gobbledygook) that's the "devil's interval" so often spoke about - the very first two notes of this melody comprise that interval.

Love butcher birds, I used to have one come and visit me every morning when I lived in Qld. He/she used to sing me a song most mornings. Used to eat the dogs dry food but only when I was inside. N3ver took it if I was outside. We had @ 70 k8lo dog in the yard that jus5 let the bird fly down and eat as much food as the bird wanted. The dog hated the magpies but loved this bird. Think the magpies attacked him a couple of times cos he was afraid of them. Thanks for this video..

Posting this as a separate comment for everyone saying they look too cute to be butchers. Here's how Shrikes got to be called Butcher birds. Butcherbirds get their name from their gruesome way of feeding. When they catch prey, they hang it off a branch or tree fork (or even barbed wire), and hack the meat away, just like a butcher. It also hangs uneaten food in the fork of a branch or impaled on a twig (their 'larder') and comes back to eat the leftovers later. 😮
