9:45 For convenience I would prefer to file off the enamel after bending back the wire. My experience with the transformers I've built yet was better when I didn‘t twist the wire too close but rather loosely. Another experience is that I had better results with 2 by 14 winding than with 3 by 21 winding. Probably a matter of wire resistance, but I don’t know exactly.

Thank you for sharing that! It is absolutely important to sand down the mag wire before making a connection. I like your idea for the technique you described. Might have to try that sometime. Thanks for watching and for the comment. 73!!!

I came back to this video after watching your follow up review. I am wondering if your disappointing results may be due to incorrect winding of the toroid. At 19:59 27 windings are shown. Perhaps you have not included the the 3 primary windings in the total count of 24 i.e. you have 3 primaries and 24 secondaries. This gives you an 81:1 transformer.

I did not consider that. This was one of my first antenna builds and a mistake is certainly likely. I will go back and look at the winding. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!!

I think you mean the FRG-7700. This is a shortwave receiver and will take a 50 ohm antenna like a fan dipole, maybe even an end fed half wave. I found a video on this unit here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/23mVnZmunqiGh6g That may help you out a bit more as I am not familiar with this radio. I hope this helps. The guy in the video used a fan dipole cut for 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meters. That may be a good starting point. Thanks for watching and for the comment. 73!

You will defiantly need a tuner for that antenna. I'm not sure what they mean when they say "no tune".
@HR4NT

If you follow the instructions and use an analyzer, you should be able to use it for the most part without a tuner, but also there are much better antennas out there that perform a lot better for a little more money. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73

If You have a good performing EFHW transformer you find with a approximate 21m long radiator on 40m band a SWR of 1.7 - 20-15-10m a SWR of less of 1.2. Problem on the QRP Guys transformer is first, that they clame that there product use a FT82-43 ferrite, and it is not. It's a something else ferrite core that does not perform. May be You can tune it on one band but it does not match on the outers. Second is that a 1:49 transformer performed better than the 1:64 from the kit. But the main problem is a wrong ferrite that is coming with the kit. I asked them about and supplied also measurements with a resistive load on the output showing a total wrong transformation behaviour. The answer from them was ignorant, telling that's there best selling kit and wished me some fun with my further experiments. So that from this Guy gays selling a non working product. So what to do? Buy a good genuine Amidon FT82-43 core and rebuild the kit with a 1:49 turn ratio (3 turns primary, 21 secondary) Then it works perfect. The shoke You place in 3-4m close to the transformer. Problem on this kit is a unknown non subtitle ferrite core that is coming with the kit causing a non resonant wire length to come to a reasonable SWR. But on this case the radiator is not resonant, and even unable to tune on the same way on the upper harmonics. And SWR becomes also very unstable tweaking around with the coax. On a good performing transformer you have almoste no effect moving the coax from one side to another. It's definatly trash kit that they are seling. But with a DIY transformer with genuine core you would be very happy - I hope You understood what I've tried to explain to you explaining Your problem's..But for shure, with this what You have You never ever will get what they advertise, a working multiband EFHW antena. And, If you would have good performing transformer wirer combination You would be very surprised how well this antena is performing. Very good contacts and a super nice and stable low SWR, without any need for a additional tuning device. The problems that You have does not come from You, it's simply that You can not active any good result from what they are selling, this QRP Gays. I hope You could make something out of my explanation - 73 my friend 👍👍

WOW..Thank you very much for that detailed analysis of the antenna components!!! I will look into that. I am open to the idea of rebuilding that antenna, however, i have other EFHW's that I built that way out perform that one so well that I rarely use it anymore. I may just have to go get a toroid and see through experimentation if I can make it perform better down the road. Thank you very much for watching the show and for that comment. 73!

@@HR4NT Shure, You can replace the core with a FT82-43 that You buy on Kitsandparts, in the US. But, I believe it doesn't worth the effort. The two QRP "Gays" kits that I got for ham buddys for examination where total trash. Just the chinês ripoff was not so bad performing. I saw Your Sparkplug aproach. Go with it since se seller seems to be honest. From the QRP buyer here in Brazil, both payed with PayPal and got there money back. But the gay kit is for the trash can anyway.

Glad you liked the video. I am not an expert on building antennas, but I like to show you guys video of me building these things and possible issues you may encounter when building them. The build was relatively easy to do, just read the instructions beforehand and take your time. I think they recommend a 29' wire for best all around results and as soon as it stops raining out here I might do a filed test video and demonstrate it. Found out that this antenna is excellent for doing SDR operations and I am, looking into that now as well. Thanks for the support! 73!!

@HR4NT

The kit indicates that the antenna wires for each band are a specific length. If you wanted to do what you are asking, you would need to set up and build traps for each band and add that to the wire. So for instance you would have a trap for 15, then 20 on your 40M wire. Personally I think it is more trouble than it is worth. KM4ACK has a really nice antenna (google: KM4ACK Antenna) that will do 40M-10M, one wire and after you get the wire length tuned you are set to go without a tuner. He offers that antenna for $35. You still have to build it, but it is a much better antenna and will work up to 100 watts. I honestly think that would be the better way to go. Thanks for the question. I hope I answered it for you. Thanks for watching. 73!
