Its really not any surprice. more than 2 cards in sli have always had bad results. like he pointed out in the end of the video, there are close to no gaming titles that is just somewhat optimized for more than dual sli. and you can see it doesn't make sense at all, even if it did scale to give a decent 4x sli performance, 1300w for 4 10 year old Gfx cards is absolutely insane considdered that just a single 1660s wich would be .. about 350watt max at the power socket will absolutely kill this config in performance. Plus he has to go up to TR cpu and Mobo to even have 4 x16 slots. like no mobo's have this today. and If you have the money for a current TR, Mobo and Ram, you also have the money for 2x 2080Ti. Surpriced anyone still use time on posting about Quad sli. as it has been dead ever since it was introduced. There is absolutely no point in it. Its just one of those things .. "We do it because we can" ... Not because it makes any sense.

@@mrdali67 I could see going for broke with a dual v2 xeon, that is, if you also need heating or don't pay for electricity. given that using it 2 hours a day would cost 90 euros, I wouldn't recommend it. but in theory it's doable on a budget (~400 euros). something I could see is if you run a shop that's cooking food sous-vide and doing renders or fold at home or something, but at this point it's a gimmick.

Bought all the parts, couldn't begin building it until the after of the next day and after a few hours of building and troubleshooting, discovered that the 580 was DOA. Next day I returned it and discovered that between the time I bought the 580 and returned it, Fry's got a fresh shipment in of 7970's and was in process of putting them on the shelves. I left that day with a diamond multimedia 7970 adn ran it for the next 4 years! Back in late 2010 I had 2 x GTX 480's in SLI. It ran pretty good so I thought I'd add a 3rd card. Tri-SLI was a big step down. I mean normal SLI had some issues but mostly worked, Tri-SLI rarely worked properly for me. The list of games it improved performance on was minuscule, I often found it ran worse than a single card did. Not to mention the heat issues and power usage. I ran Dual-card SLI on everything from the 7800 GTX to GTX 980's - I had almost every generation between those two in SLI. I'm saddened that NVIDIA and AMD have both seemingly abandoned multi-GPU. I think it not only looks cool in an enthusiast build but it's nice to leverage that extra performance. I really wish NVIDIA would re-imagine multi-GPU so it works more seamlessly and without the need for an equivalent of SLI profiles. Maybe it's not technically possible at the moment.

And I feel like I am just very easy to satisfy when I hear people say that 100fps is "good enough". Sure, I can appreciate the difference, but I personally can't see any difference once fps gets over 90. But then, I don't train my brain for competitive esports because that's not the kind of game I enjoy. @de8auer Thanks for another interesting video, and I can't say that I'm very surprised over the results. "Back in the day" I tested quad-SLI with 4xTitan-Blacks ((used for rendering)) and though my memories of the "performance scaling" for benchmarks (or gaming) were somewhat better than what we saw here my results were still quite atrocious. In my experience the best case scenario SLI (2 cards) could give "almost twice" the performance but after that it was pretty "pointless". 3xSLI at best gave me closer to 2.5 times performace, and then with 4xSLI the gains were half of that again. Meaning that the last card at most contributed with something like 25% of what a single card would perform... Then again I didn't spend all that much time bechmarking or gaming as I used the cards for other things, for which the SLI was not used. But Yea that rig drew almost 1500 Watts "at the wall" when under full load (rendering with an OC 5960x, that thing truly was a "spaceheater" :) Still interesting to see how the old 580's "stacked up" Best regards

@@chriscracraft3422 780ti is quite a bit more powerful than 580s. Back in the day when I had a pair of 580s I felt the 1.5GB of VRAM caused quite a bit of issues in things one would want a pair of these cards for. I always felt that 3GB made more sense but they were impractical once the 680s launched. I've always wanted to revisit the 1.5 vs 3GB debate since I still have my platform from that time era.

@@ppmguire I play with my system alot with overclocking and the same system is currently my media server/streaming rig, If I play to hard with an overclock and it locks up, I have to deal with complaint of why the media server is down. So once I get the 4 way 780ti's configured, I can turn that rig into my media server and render station while I test my clock speeds on the 2080 system.

you benchmarked the wrong games and you used the wrong motherboard derBauer, although, it was interesting to see how bad threadripper was at handling quad SLI, and I was actually surprised you even got quad SLI to work at all on that board; I would've probably suggested using the X99 platform and finding one of those rare boards with 4 x16 slots, that would've most likely worked. also, for benchmarks you should've put Quake 3 Arena, Doom 3, CS:GO, Crysis 1,2,3 heaven benchmark, GTA V, far cry 3, doom 2016, i'm not exactly sure which games would really benefit from quad sli but i know crysis does

Bring back Quad SLI!; Correction: Make Quad SLI work! The way it should work is like adding disks to an array. You shouldn't make separate drivers for 2+ configurations. You should just have a pool of GPUs, where you can add/remove GPUs. The application using the GPU(s) would see the rendering hardware as a single entity.
@RadarLeon

I would like that to be how things work just have a boot check and a branch scheduler and have each card work on it's current and at least 1 future frame set so if one card has a hiccups the next card picks it up basically card schedules (1)12 (2)23 (3)34 (4)45 (1)56 (2)67 sure this would kills some performance if only 2 cards but you'd still continuously scale for instance if card 1 finishes frame 1 and 2 before card 2 finish frame 2 card 3 can continue with frame 3 if done if not but frame 3 is finished on card 2 then card 3 could then output frame 4 ect

And it does work that way, for enterprise level GPU's handling enterprise tasks. Quad SLI was always just a brain-fart test bed for figuring out new tricks and uses for enterprise level hardware. The extremely small fractiion of a percent of people who used it on consumer grade hardware didn't even come close to paying a fraction of a percent of the R&D costs associated with it. It's useless for gaming, because the monitor drives the timescale. Rendering workloads are by nature unpredictable in scale, and performance per core, per card, varies by nature also. This becomes a problem because the monitor is always requesting workloads immediately, and every time you add a card, you multiply the variables in the possible frame-times exponentially until you have more frames being culled than being produced on time. With an enterprise task, which isn't being requested immediately, finished parts of the project can be cached and held until other cores are finished with their tasks. Enterprise workloads scale great with additional cards. Graphics rendering will always scale like crap because of the demand by the user to see the results instantaneously regardless of the order of the work's completion.

8:35 NO, you can! I using 445.87 with my GT 650M GTX 1080 Ti combo. Last driver GT 650M is support officially was 425.31. Just need to add old card in the driver and install driver in special mode in windows (F7 - without driver certification check). It's danger to install pre-modded drivers, since you don't know what was modded exactly, but if you donloaded official driver and modded by youself - it's safe (at least it's my opinion). If you need - i can explain how. It's an old trick, but it's still working.
