Yep, this is extremely normal and actually a good incentive to make more affordable products. It's kind've like in the gaming industry where even getting access to some game engines you HAVE to buy a license for it for like $50,000 but with other game engines you can use them completely for free and the only catch is if you make a popular game you pay them a percentage of the earnings instead. It allows hobbyist to compete and removes any barrier to entry and only when you're successful do you have to give them a cut. Same with CAD and 3D modeling software, I certainly can't afford to spend $100,000 a year on subscription fees and as a hobbyist I don't have to spend a single cent, it's only when I start making a lot of money from it do I have to start giving them a cut. If qualcomm made a flat $100 fee then pretty much every cheap phone that uses it would cost $100 more now and then you'll never see these chips being used in low end phones. This is essentially a good "pay when you can afford it" strategy where unless you're making bank too then it wont cost you anything extra and you can even get chips for far cheaper than the monopolized tech giants... Monopolies happen because tech giants are allowed to buy in bulk and get an overall cheaper price per unit, that allows them to undercut all the small companies and drive out any potential competition. This is actually a GOOD thing because the rich are taxed MORE as it should be meanwhile the smallfries are given a fighting chance with cheaper prices.

Apple only needs Qualcomm for 5G chips. Whereas Samsung and almost all flagship Android phonemakers use Qualcomm chipsets, Apple make their own (specifically, TSMC manufactures them). So Apple is still somewhat dependent of Qualcomm, and it would be relatively affected by a hypothetical liquidation of Qualcomm, but others will be hit much, MUCH more severely. Also Qualcomm is not worth more that neither Apple nor Nvidia. Apple is about to close at $3T, making it the most valuable company in history. Nvidia’s worth around $1T. As for Qualcomm, around $135B, 1/7th of Nvidia, 1/22 of Apple.

But gotta give it to them, until recently, every generation of their flagship SOC's were a massive jump compared to its last generation. So yes they are greedy but at the same time you get what you are paying for. Eversince i got a phone with Qualcomm soc back in 2012, i never looked back. They were ahead in the game for 2 decades.

It's bonkers that people think that monopolies are just fine, then turn around and whine about everything being so expensive. When you don't have competition, you control the price. Also, most of the tech out there was funded by public money. We should not be paying exuberant cost for anything. This goes for pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, gas, etc. most things are subsidized by public funds.

Qualcomm sells research and expertise. Sure, they have the patents, but that's the mantel of their world. They dont just draw it up in CAD and put a for sale sign on it. They design it and test it. When it doesn't work, they dig deep into the details and learn why. Then redesign, proof the design, and sell the knowledge they gain.

1. Why are they saying this like it's a bad thing? 2. Phone isn't much use without the chip, yes?

Qualcomm truly is a mafia in the tech world, they patented almost every common way to build 4g and 5g receivers and so you can’t go anywhere else. They also have extremely strict contracts with their buyers with clauses that trap you into staying with them.

5% is comically low, a Qualcomm soc is around 200 dollars.

This is why their customer support sucks. They are nigh impossible to get into a call when you’re having issues with one of their modems.

I rather the company who actually MADE take a percentage on it than wall street and middlemen!
