Quando el Rey Nimrod, sephardic music, a song by the sephardic Jews. Video created in Barcelona, during the confinement due to the Covid-19 virus. We looked for a song that can make people dance and enjoy for a few moments in their houses, but a song connected to the traditional music that we all play. We choose this Sephardic song, Quando el Rey Nimrod, beacuse it's one of the most groovy and rhytmic songs in Sephardic music.
Sefarad is Spain in Hebrew, and in English it refers to ancient Spain, where many Jewish communities existed before the expulsion from Spain. Nowadays the word gives us a nostalgic moment, remembering the rich cultural life of Jews in old Spain. The Jews that were expelled settled in many communities around the world. The Jewish communities in the Ottoman empire, and in Morocoo went on speaking the Sephardic language, or Ladino. One of the forms to maintain the language were the Sephardic songs, sung by mothers to their children, or in festivities.
Lyrics:
Quando el Rey Nimrod al campo salía
mirava en el cielo y en la estrellería
vido una luz santa en la Judería
que havía de nascer Abraham Avinu.
Abraham Avinu, Padre querido
Padre bendicho, luz de Yisrael.
La mujer de Terach quedó preñada
y de día en día le preguntava
¿De qué teneix la cara tan demudada?
ella ya sabía el bien qué tenía.
Abraham Avinu, Padre querido
Padre bendicho, luz de Yisrael.
