The magnetic quantum number is the electron position within the subshells s, p, d, f. You can think of the magnetic quantum number as the electron position/orientation in 3D. Which is why when l=1 (p orbital), this allows 3 possible electron orientations because m = -1, 0, +1 (total of 3).

You are getting energy levels mixed up with sub-levels. n=1 has 1 energy sub-level; s n=2 has 2 energy sub-levels; s, p n=3 has 3 energy sub-levels; s, p, d n=4 has 4 energy sub-levels; s, p, d, f etc. s=0 p=1 d=2 f=3 the s m(l)= 0 the p m(l)= -1, 0, 1 the d m(l)= -2, -1, 0, 1, 2 the f m(l)= -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3

Hi Mr Causey, if n can equal any value up to 7, then what orbitals do the the n values of 5, 6 and 7 correspond to?
@mrcausey
4 жыл бұрын
"n" refers to the energy level and each energy level has a certain number of sublevels (l). In the sublevels are the orbitals which can be s, p, d, or f. An energy level can only have sublevels equal to n. Thus, n=1 can only have 1 sublevel (s), n=2 can have 2 sublevels (s, p) etc. Each type of sublevel has a certain number of orbitals: s has 1; p has 3; d has 5 and f has 7.
