Welcome to Part 4 of QuaranLieder! Today's video is actually NOT German lieder (I know, I know) but is one of Charles Ives' 114 songs! The commission is from award winning composer Chris Opperman, on twitter as @ chris_opperman, who also played the piano part. I had to do a little research for this one, as the published work has BLANKS in the lyrics! At the end it says "Shades of ____, _____, and ____" so I had to do a little digging. It actually should read "Hawley, Smith, and Nevin" which refers to Charles Hawley, H.B. Smith, and Ethelbert (LMAO btw at that name) Nevin. They were Broadway/Pop songwriters and lyricists back in the day (1892, not 1992!) They were blacked out from public publication because I guess the lyrics were a little TOO shady? Note my eye roll when I sing "I love youuuuuu"
Also note that Ives references Nevin's work "Narcissus" towards the very end of the song. But despite the hilarious pettiness of Ives' song, I think he's only very gently poking fun. I do love all the old Kern/Smith turn of the century songs. I think we all love the nostalgia, even if they aren't the height of sophistication.
