A biracial teen and his mother said Sunday they would file a complaint against Hockey Quebec with the province’s Human Rights and Youth Rights Commission following an incident during a hockey game last December where the n-word was allegedly used against the 16-year-old.
“He thankfully didn’t hear it himself, but his teammates did and they notified the referees,” said the teen’s mother, Laurie Phillips. “Because the referees didn’t hear it, nothing was done about it.”
The mother and son say Hockey Quebec is not doing enough to combat anti-Black racism against junior players.
As Elizabeth Zogalis reports, the family wants to ensure other players don’t face discrimination.
