I totally agree Lawrence, I've many wire excluders both with and without frames. I like them and they don't cause any injuries. They are tricky to clean. I gently melt everything with a gas flame. The plastic ones, I think cover all bases. I won't entertain the stamped metal ones as they definitely shed wings. Another nice little video. Stuart

Cheers Stuart. Yes that's the only downside with the wired ones. We just use the cleaning tool and leave them on their own hive to avoid any disease transmission.

I definitely agree wire excluder with a wooden rim, I find the plastic excluder good but on the maisemoore hives a bit fiddly due to no top bee space but not impossible.
@BlackMountainHoney

Yes. Wire with wooden frame is certainly the easiest to use on BBS. Wire with no frame is great for TBS. Plastic is fine but does require some smoke and a good scrape of the top bars to keep things neat.

Plastic every time, cheap as chips and the quality is not too bad these days. And when buying a load at one go the price point becomes important, especially as the bees are providing an income (hopefully!) and every cost needs to be looked at. I pressure wash mine which brings them up like new.
@BlackMountainHoney

I cant disagree. I love the wooden framed wire QX, but when buying any more, it will be plastic. Ill get 100 for £300ish vs £1800ish. No brainer. Pressure wash is a great tip! Cheers.

My Queen Excluder of choice is the wire in wooden frame but even within that there is a wide choice. I bought a number of new ones at Beetradex last spring and went round all the stands and concluded Abelo sold the best one. Ps. Love the Bit Size videos. 👍

Cheers Pete. 100% agree. The oak framed ones from Abelo are the ones we use. Properly lapped joints and made of oak so will last for years without degrading. Glad you the BSB episodes. Saves me waffling!

I bought a metal and a plastic one from Abelo with the 12 frame National hives, I noticed the Metal one sits direct on frames (plastic one doesn't) which I don't think is good as the hive is top bee space, what is your view?
@BlackMountainHoney
2 жыл бұрын
Both work well. I use both styles in my beekeeping (not with the 12 frame)/ You essentially have to work out where is best to pry from. Top of the frames or bottom of frames. I prefer the flat one that sites on the rebate as you can then use BBS supers with minimal brace comb.

Please run a quick test to see which ones the bees will enter readily. Previous test indicates the do not like to go through plastic.

We use plenty of plastic and they are fine. I know a certain beekeeping supplier who I wont name had a batch of LOTS of the plastic ones with the hole sizing too small and bees couldn't fit through them! Cost people a lot of money with lost crops and swarming. Regardless, I will do some tests later in the year and show the practical differences with the bees :)

Don't wish to sound really stupid (not much hope of that, I know!) but with the wooden frames wire QExcluder, why do you have it so that it's flat side up if you're using bottom bee space system like Nationals? I always thought it should go flat side down? Thanks.
@BlackMountainHoney
3 жыл бұрын
Nope. it's flat side up to provide a bee space above the frames. The bottom bee space means the bees space is at the bottom of the frames. So you need to add it on the top.

I assume that the lack of bee space on the plastic ones doesn't really matter as the QE is full of holes anyway :-)
@BlackMountainHoney

Its a bit more without the beespace but adding an excluder makes little difference. Still no space above frames and space below (depending on which way you look at it!)

End of last season I bought two of the XP Queen Excluder PLUS from Thornes on sale (£3ea) to try out. They are a plastic excluder with a bee space rim. www.thorne.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=1857 Didn't get to try them out but will be interesting to see how they fare, I've ignored the plastic excluders included with my Swienty hives.
