Hey Ken. I'm speculating here and haven't read this anywhere, but i think from what I know about Freddie, he would have preferred it not to be "perfect" because he would have considered imperfection to be "rock." Rock isn't meant to be perfect. It's meant to be raw and real. Gritty. Just what i was thinking each time you queried it. Wonder what you think to that. Enjoy your vids though man. Ps. A study was done in 2016 which concluded that Freddie likely used ventricular fold phonation simultaneously with his vocal cords. The resulting sound includes subharmonics. Since he wasn’t a Tuvan Throat singer, he likely did this naturally without knowing it was happening. That may explain both the frequency range of his vibrato as well as his apparent lack of control of the same. He was also likely a natural baritone who pushed his voiced into tenor for his records and performances.

I love it when amazingly talented singers let their voices crack while singing with passion; it feels so much more emotional. If I (as a horrible singer) do it, it sounds even worse. But when Freddie did it or when Sia does it, I am completely captivated. It draws me in and let's me get lost in the music. Unlike a cleaned up track where the emotion is mostly removed and I'm invited to merely spectate rather than invited in to participate.

Great job Ken! What a massive undertaking - thanks for the analysis. Funny enough, I noticed Freddie's 'warbles' & imperfections long ago - never cared - his vocals were still untouchable. It did indeed humanize him - he was mortal, but his range, his capability of singing soft and sweet and in the very next phrase going raspy & raw was just incredible! Then add his stage presence and you have THE GREATEST frontman ever. There will never be another like him! I'd love your take on The Prophet's Song - especially Freddie's layered acapella, then going right into what I could call progressive metal. No song is like this! I fully agree on your thought of The Show Must Go On - I still get chills hearing that song, the power he still had in his voice, so close to the end - truly an incredible talent!

I've been a huge Queen fan since 1974 (yeah, I'm old lol) I've listened to Bo Rhap very closely for many years. I've heard isolated tracks of vocals and instrumentals, but this analysis has brought so much new insight to the song and its production that I'm in awe. After all these years, I've found a fresh set of glasses (and headphones), so to speak, to experience this song through. Bravo Ken!!! I learned so much about a song I thought I knew everything about! It was fun, revealing and educational. Thank you!!! What truly made Freddie great was not that his voice was perfect (it wasn't) but that he was able to express what was in his heart and soul vocally - emotion emanated from the phrasing, color and timbre of his voice. 🎶🎹

'Everything working together in concert'. This is the essence of Bohemian Rhapsody, and what makes it such an iconic piece. As a child I sang a lot of choral music, and I still remember when Bohemian Rhapsody was released (1975). Absolutely loved watching this. The breakdown and opportunity to study Freddy Mercurys singing is not only a great opportunity for me to learn but also a huge confidence boost to hear the tiny imperfections. Even more of a confidence boost to understand that small errors or imperfections can give personality or character to a performance. Perfect may not always be perfect. I also loved to the technical side of the production and Mr Ken Tamplin still astounds me with his knowledge and expertise in singing and all things music related. Plus, it's such fun watching these.

Such stimulating song! So emotional... dramatic, humorous at times and triumphant in the end. It takes you on a fantastic ride, traveling through pain and suffering and landing you in the center of the jubilant forces of his soul. 👀

Btw there's no need for perfection, that's why people hate autotune and protools, we are not machines, the song is figuratively about a man about to die, you don't cry to your momma with perfect intonation

I agree. Nothing is perfect. When you add instruments everything sound different.

You do if autotune is available. 99 out of 100 mothers agree. When listening to their sons crying, wailing, etc., most mothers prefer to listen to their sons die in tune. They prefer it if he's sharply tuned in the C4 to C5 range! "Autotune really rounded out the rough edges in my son's singing confession of breaking the seal on my 99 y.o. Scotch at his 8th grade graduation party" stated one mother, 4 minutes before her son's untimely Covid-19 death.

"Didn't mean to make you cry" "face the truth" those two parts I always hold my breath when singing it because I noticed it hurts your throat if you sing it like Freddy did. Learned that somewhere 🤔😏 I've sang it around 50 times at karaoke with various DJs and they frequently make a big deal that the song is tough BUT this video shows that cracking voice and imperfect vibrato is ok when you're showing emotion 👌

I can't help but notice your smile when you add in your parts. I see you've found a way to re-energize yourself. Nice work. You are also giving great insight to composition and recording.👍

Love Freddie he is probably the best of all time. I think Meatloaf would be great choice to do as well. He also has a wonderful voice and doesn't seem to get as much praise as he should.

omg ... this video is a piece of art .. thank you Ken .. my mind is blown .. from the bottom of my heart - i appreciate everything that you've done here .. and you did it ALL ..... i remember Band Aid (watched on TV live) .. i was like: umm .. Freddie your voice is not in good shape, but somehow everything that Queen did that night on the stage was perfect .. i heard some cracks in his voice, and i thought : man, this is imperfect perfection .. i wasn't sure what i loved the most that night .. the band .. Freddie .. the crowd .. charisma .. stage presence .. till this day, if i chose to watch Queen - Live Aid i need to watch it at least 3 times in a row .. just to be amazed again

Thank you for this. The best thing I've heard in a long time that may help many people is the statement you used about "Humanizing the artists," because often times, as in the case with Ozzy or Freddy Mercury, we see them as Gods who are perfect in every way. I sing with my daughter in live performances. Anytime she introduces me to a new artist, I say, "I want to hear them sing that live" because it they can sound close to their recording, then they are great. But, more often than not, they fall very short of the mark they set on the recording that so many of us hear on the recorded version. I appreciate you taking the time to break this down to its bare element so we can hear exactly what is going on. It motivates me, to not only make better recordings, but to know that we are NEVER perfect. Music, especially live performances, are really about an expression and transferring that to an audience and for anyone to do that, I applaud them. Thank you Ken!
