Queen Hatshepsut’s Mortuary Temple has three colonnaded terraces. Her name means Foremost of Noble Ladies, she was the sister wife of pharaoh Thutmose II before he died. Her successor, Thutmose III was the last to build here, for many years he was co regent with his stepmother and aunt Hatshepsut. Thutmose III, or more likely his son Amenhotep II, tried to erase Hatshepsut from the historical record, which can be seen in the defacing of her temple. Hatshepsut is regarded by many as the pharaoh’s daughter who took Moses from the Nile. In the last picture you can see how close the fertile Nile area is to the temple which was probably closer still in the past before the dams were constructed and the seasonal inundation occurred.
