The woman who leans down on the balcony was an Austrian actress Freddie met in Germany and had a close relationship/friendship (or both) with just before he left Munich behind him. This song is powerful done live and I agree with comment below on the performance in Rio. Shortly after the opening bars of the song, he misses a lyric and seamless continues on the piano humming it and glides right back in. Performers fear those moments but he is present and in the moment - just where he should be. Really a nice moment.

Barbara Valentin: they shared an apartment in Munich for several months. She is also seen in the video at Garden Lodge. He wrote a song for a movie she was in, but I don't know if this was it or not. She had said he was the love of her life.
Sadly, Freddie was a romantic and he had his heart broken several times. Of course, at the end of his life, he and his partner, Jim Hutton, had been together for a very loving and stable 7 years. Freddie is the composer of "It's a Hard Life". He loved both rock 'n roll and opera and he was enamored with the idea of combining the two together. The opening of "It's a Hard Life" is based on an aria from Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci. Brian May (Queen's lead guitarist) shared, "To my mind, this is one of the most beautiful songs that Freddie ever wrote. It's straight from the heart, and he really opened up during the creation of it, I sat with him for hours and hours and hours just trying to pull it away and get the most out of it. It's one of his loveliest songs." Roger Taylor (Queen's drummer) admitted that this was one of his favorite songs that Freddie wrote, but he absolutely HATED the music video and being a part of it. John Deacon (Queen's bass guitarist) also hated the video. (They did not like the costumes they wore). Musically, the song harks back to classic Queen rock ballads like "Play The Game" and "Save Me," and the piano parts sound strikingly similar in places to the classic first section from "Bohemian Rhapsody.". It seems to recreate the feel of “Play the Game” in order to update the story, The music video was filmed at Arri Film Studios in Munich in June of 1984 and is set at a masquerade ball. The video features Freddie surrounded by high decadence, which is being enjoyed by all around him. It was entirely Freddie’s idea - he had wanted to recreate the set of the Pagliacci opera. This video was an expensive one. As well as a large number of extras and the enormous set, the video also featured a custom-made guitar that was built in Japan for Brian. The guitar with its skull-shaped body and long, bone-shaped neck was impossible to play and far too small for Brian, but at a cost of over £1000, it was used as much as possible. Brian loved that guitar even though it couldn't be played and he still has it. You might have spotted how Freddie takes his time to sit down on the steps in the final shot of the video. This was because he had damaged ligaments in his knee outside a club in Munich and it is clear from the way he lowers himself onto the stair that he was still favoring that knee.

Actually Freddie was still with Winnie Kurchburger until early 1986. People seem to add years onto Freddie and Jim. Yes, Jim was at Live Aid as a guest at that time. Freddie still wore Winnies ring in early 86. Winnie was also at Freddie's Hendersons birthday party....he is stood behind Freddie while Freddie blew out his candles and there is a picture of Freddie with Winnie alongside another party goer there. Brian said Freddie absolutely loved Winnie and was heartbroken when they split. The reason for the split is because Freddie asked Winnie to move into Garden Lodge near the end of 85 when it was ready to be lived in. Winnie though didn't want to leave his family or the restaurant and also the language barrier was a problem....hence Barbera Valentin used to interpret their conversations. Jim was asked to move in to Garden Lodge 6 months later.... he was hanging around knowing Freddie was, in Freddie's words, married to Winnie.. Jim even said of the Hendersons party that he was only invited to make Winnie jealous. So if he thought that, why go at all??? That was in Huttons book by the way.... Peter has mentioned Freddie asking Winnie to live with him, as did Brian May. That's not to say in the 5 1/2 months they were actually living together, Jim and Freddie were not happy. They did have ups and downs. Jim came across Freddie again in 1985 in a restaurant, hence their friendship before Winnie and Freddie broke up.

This is such a beautiful vocal by Freddie. He seems to really be feeling the lyrics. Freddie had a hard time finding someone who loved him for who he was instead of his money or his fame. Freddie had such a big heart and kept his friends close, even those who in the past had hurt him. The guitar solo in this song is also so beautiful.

I love this song .. the costumes & sets are very decadent! 🥂🍾 Before this video shoot Freddie had a cast removed from his leg! He’s kinda moving gingerly! Now go watch the live version Rock n Rio 1985. Very emotional, it’s really obvious on his face during that performance! Amazing isn’t he?

I think this was the videoclip Brian and Roger disliked, because of the clothing. And also Freddie was injured in the leg, because of a long and fun night.

"To trust in one another right from the start When you're in love" this is my favourite line. According to Brian Freddie was desperately unhappy at that time. I think this lavish video depicts his loneliness amongst the lot of people who surrounded him.

Poor Freddie got his heart broken a LOT, actually. (He even had one boyfriend who hit him.😳) Thank goodness he finally got to settle down with his “common law husband” (because Gay marriage was illegal)… Jim Hutton.💕 Freddie actually pursued Jim for a year and a half before getting a date with him! (And Fred did always have the support of his lifelong best friend Mary Austin).🫶

@@Eddycheeee Well Fred was so private (he almost NEVER gave interviews)… I’ve just picked up bits of info/insight here-and-there from interviews after-his-passing w folks who were close to him.😸 There IS a really EXCELLENT documentary, tho, titled… “Freddie Mercury: The Untold Story”. It starts out w his childhood. VERY well-done so it’s enjoyable to watch, as well as informative.
