The band members were so excited to be playing at the Rainbow, they thought it was a pinnacle moment, the highest they could possibly get, I mean, Bowie had played at the Rainbow and the other major players in British rock. For Queen this seemed to be a confirmation that they had finally arrived. I love the footage of them arriving, they look so happy and excited. They were young boys who had no idea how much further they would actually end up going. Freddie was such a Rock Star, even back then. Thank you for choosing to react to this concert.

Procession was a tape and Queen did that quite a lot for their various show openings, which I think is fine as they're not pretending that it's live. However, what irritates me is that there were post-production overdubs on this recording, but believe only on Now I'm Here as I cannot hear them on any of the other songs (and I think this the only released live show where they did this as they were an honest 'live' band and didn't need to cheat), shame really. I have been a Queen fan for years, the first show I went to was Hyde Park, so it has always annoyed me that for the sake of 'perfection' they did these overdubs, but so be it. I first saw this recording many years before it was officially released as it was available to Queen Fan Club members in the nineties on VHS tape which I still have. Anyway Justin keep up the great work. You're the only reactor who noticed the overdubs by the way.

Queen used live vocals, Roger and Brian sang live backing vocals. The procession, God Save The Queen I don't think they ever played live and the Opera section of Bohemian Rhapsody were backing tracks only because it would be impossible to create it on stage, everything else was live.. Queen pride themselves for being live on stage it was very important to them, they used something to echo Freddie's voice on some songs, but it was live, as Freddie said the audience could just stay home and listen to the record, so being live was everything to Queen. Brian did play God Save The Queen on the roof of Buckingham Place live.😊

Procession was a taped insrumental piece that Brian had put together. That was played at earlier concerts and then at the end of concert they had a piece that Brian had put together of God Save the Queen. That was played at the end of every Queen concert. Thanks for doing The Rainbow!

The tracks and triggers you mentioned is probably just the extra things they added for the 2014 release. The previous release in the 90s had all the imperfections, Queen Productions cleaned it up for the 2014 release.

The overdubs were also in the original recording if you listen to it, I remember being so disappoiinted that they did that. They stand out like a sore thumb in Now I'm Here. To be clear these were post production, no tapes during the performance.

so off to research, I tried to track down a couple of sites that were super at sussing out the original versions.. Found only one who goes over the "corrections" Queen Productions made to Live At The Rainbow video when they released it in 2002 and again in 2014. Addresses this song & others with the double vocals & also the tidying up of the drums, bass & guitar. To the point of deleting small parts of live on stage chords and replacing them with the studio verion if they differed from the official recording. Queen Productions didn't go line by line, but if a word was missplaced, a chord messed up, or Freddie sang flat in concert, they were prettied up on this release. Sad. Live is live & to be enjoyed as originally performed. And these 4 guys were really excellent in concert! If you attended the concert, there was no tracking or singing over recorded stuff. It was raw. Later on when they'd do Bohemian Rhapsody everyone knew they weren't singing the opera section. They didn't pretend to be. In that moment Queen would leave the stage, change costume and return AFTER the recorded opera section was done, to finish it off live.

The only tapes that Queen used during their live performances were relays, normally 30 second loop that would be played back. Brian used two in his guitar solos

Sorry, but that performance was completely live using only the vocals of Freddie, Roger, and Brian. The opening sound effects were created by a roadie manually delaying the sound in some of the feeds. Today they would employ something like Audacity Software to perform that function. Freddie would be seen singing the line "Now I'm here" on one side of the stage amidst the darkness and dry ice, and a few bars later, at "Now I'm there," he would "appear" on the other side of the stage, an illusion created by an identically-dressed stagehand. This song, "Now I'm Here" was written by Brian and is about the hard, fast, good, and bad times of extensive touring, which the band did during their first few years. As the band has been quick to note, their success did not come overnight - success in America particularly was laid by many years of touring there in the 1970s. In 1974 Queen went on their first American tour as the support band for "Mott the Hoople's' American tour. Queen had a great time on tour with "Mott the Hoople", but unfortunately, Brian fell ill near the end of the tour with severe hepatitis and the Queen left the tour before the end to bring Brian back to the UK. He spent many of the sessions for Sheer Heart Attack recovering in hospital. He since admitted that he was nervous that the band would find a replacement, and he was determined to keep working to stop that from happening. As it turned out, the band never even considered replacing Brian, and John (Deacon) doubled as lead guitarist along with bass player on several recordings (like Killer Queen) for the album Sheer Heart Attack. They did leave space in the songs they were already working on for him to add his solo parts when he was healthy enough. In "Now I'm Here", Brian memorializes touring from city to city (Now I'm here, now I'm there). They were so inexperienced when they started but "Mott the Hoople" acted as mentors to them and taught them the ropes of touring and they learned. A baby I was when you took my hand The light of the night burned bright The people all stared, didn't understand But you knew my name on sight Whatever came of you and me? America's new bride to be Don't worry babe, I'm safe and sound Down in the Dungeon, just Peaches and me It also contains personal notes ("Down in the Dungeon, just Peaches and me). The Dungeon is a famous rock and roll bar in New Orleans's French Quarter and Peaches was Brian's girlfriend at the time.) It paints a metaphoric description of what it's like to appear on stage: A thin moon me in a smoke-screen sky The beams of your love light chase Don't move, don't speak, don't feel no pain The rain running down my face Your matches still light up the sky And many a tear lives on in my eye Down in the city, just Hoople and me, all right (FYI - The reference to "Hoople" is a nod at the "Mott the Hoople" band) It holds the record as the Queen song which lasted in their live set the longest, from release in 1974 right through to their final stadium shows with Freddie in 1986. It also regularly appeared on live compilations.

The overwhelming thing you learn from this early footage is just how powerful Freddie's vocals were originally. I wonder if his voice was wearing thin or if he just toned it down to reach those higher notes in later compositions ?
@ZENOBlAmusic

Freddie's voice had power but his voice because far more powerful and heavier as he aged. This usually happens with tenors with big voices. I don't know how you are listening if you think his voice was less powerful later on, it was clearly more powerful.

Very cool. I’ve been a Queen fan for many years but I’m not familiar with early live recordings and have never seen this recording. My guess is that Procession is a recording. But other than that I’m not sure if they used triggers or recorded tracks for vocals. My guess is that it’s Brian and Roger on backing vocals and Freddie’s voice is duplicated live by a sound tech on stage. My guess is all. In any case super cool. Looking forward to the other songs.

As someone stated, May and Taylor won't release anything that is not perfect. So they really "repaired" all the mistakes. You notice it when they get out of the solo into the "chorus" (Whatevery came of you and me...) because I think I have heard a bootleg version of that show where they messed this up. I think Brian went into the chorus too early while Roger was still hitting the toms... That's why it feels shortened. Their first offical live album "Live Killers" was made up from several shows all across Europe with some songs being puzzled together with bits from different shows. Somebody compared bootlegs from the shows to the Live Killers album and found out what part was from which show. Still their best live album.

Let's see, November 1974 I had just turned 16, it would be 4 more years before I saw them live at Madison Square Garden. I believe the "extra" Freddie vocals were tape to give the effect from the album, traveling around the room. Just like the "Operatic" section of Bohemian Rhapsody. Some things, especially 50 years ago, were impossible to recreate on stage.

I've always considered Queen as much more of a studio band not unlike the Beatles later years. The epitome of "recording artist" with some very dense,perfect, uncomprimized records.Their first 7 albums through "Jazz" are nothing short of EPIC and highly influencial on many great bands to come. Having said that, they did have their share of "Straight rockers" that did translate well to the stage. BRILLIANT!!!

I am a fan of both LIAR (everyone has a spotlight moment) and STONE COLD CRAZY (crisp blitz on stage) - both LIVE at the Rainbow. Queen had an artistry & pride about onstage performances. Innovative, but on top of their game & not slackers. Tinkering with new tech in later year look backs? Speak to it upfront if you can't resist...but keep the original out there for the respect it deserves.

This version of NIH has so much grunt and swagger, which I think really suits the song. I also think that you can hear Hendrix's influence on Brian May more overtly in the early years than as time went on. And no, no additional vocals from 'tape' or any other sources. They were simply vocally incredible, especially Roger, who had the voice of ten men. And at least another five women. No, they didn't play Procession live. Too many guitar layers.
