Doran is always too little too late with his plans. Read the first Areo Hotah chapter again, it has the symbolism of overripe blood oranges falling to the ground and splattering. It's symbolic of Doran's plans which seem to just get his family members killed. Arianne's plans are the same as her father's. >Sending Oberyn to King's Landing gets Oberyn brutally killed needlessly >Sending Quentyn to Meereen gets Quentyn brutally killed needlessly >Arienne's plan to crown Myrcella queen gets Arys Oakheart brutally killed needlessly What's shocking is that these deaths do not even make give Doran and Arianne pause to their plotting. They just keep going. Ellaria's speech sums up the entire Dornish plotline. She's effectively a widow and the Mountain's skull which Oberyn died for cannot raise their daughters with her or love her. It is worthless.

I think it is because of the usual thing that all narration in books or movies must have a purpose. 1) Drive the plot forward. 2) Build or establish the character(s). 3) Build or establish the world. So much of the last two books are just pointless drawn out to many chapters. Quentyns chapters has some minor worldbuilding. The Dorne chapters has worldbuilding and character building, but they are detached from the main plot, so seen as is are without purpose. Brienne riding across Westeros in search of Arya and Sansa. Worldbuilding but uninteresting, would fit better in a separate book (tales from westeros). Dany conquering the slave cities? Could have been handled in a couple, or even a single chapter. Sons of the harpy, could be characterbuilding for Dany, but we dont know. Jaime Lannister conquering Westeros, could have been so much shorter. The last two books could easily have been one book for what little actually happens. Martin says he is a ”gardener” storyteller, well in those two books he made us watch the equivalent of grass growing. Now agree or disagree with what I just said, if Quentyn is alive, it would add some much needed purpose to the last two books.

Someone dies, though the person is burned beyond reconignition. Earlier in the story the phase "burned bones mean nothing" is used. He's not hit with intense dragon flame as described in other accounts, where eyeballs explode instantly for example. His companions change their mannerisms after the incident... are just a few of the red herrings. I think GRRM left it ambigous to decide later if Quentyn being alive is important to the story. On a side note, people who are unattractive and have problems with women are ones the author likes since that mirrors his early life.

After watching hotd and rereading fire and blood I’m convinced that the Quentyn storyline’s point is to show that a distant “drop of dragon blood” isn’t enough to claim a dragon. If it was, all the Martells, half the smallfolk of Dragonstone, all the Baratheons and their bastards, Rennifer Longwaters, and anyone else distantly descended from a Targaryen could claim a dragon. By showing that Quentyn’s single distant ancestor isn’t enough, Martin ties up a loose end so that he doesn’t have to contend with ALL the distant Targ descendants.

I think Quentyn's purpose was releasing the dragons before they could be killed. When Quentyn and co. reached the guards of the dragon doors, the password they were given was wrong; meaning the conspiracists in Meereen had infiltrated the Brazen Beasts and were waiting to kill Viserion and Rhaegal. Quentyn saved them.

I was already convinced but this was so well explained, I listened to the whole thing. House Martell's long-running experience with death is only going to continue. In the real world, the Bible talks about forgiveness and God tells us "Avenge not yourselves, Vengeance is mine, *I* will repay, saith the Lord" (Romans 12:19 KJV). I think George is making a point about forgiveness and just letting other people's punishment come to them. When we try to take things into our own hand , it often backfires in unexpected ways, not to mention, making us worthy of punishment by making ourselves an evildoer. The Lannisters and their loyalists die or suffer brutally for their crimes (Tywin dies violently, Kevan dies violently, Gregor is suffering and did suffer and wasn't even given peace in death for his crimes, Amory Lorch suffers, The Tyrells will probably be annihilated and be replaced by the cunning Florents by story's end. Cersei and Jaime suffer and will probably die, Tyrion may survive but traumatised and tongueless) and Doran has and will likely live to see it all happen at other people's hands, but... By trying to be judge, jury, executioner and God, many of his own family will die needlessly, when if he just watched and waited, his enemies would fall like flies before him.

@58:80. You don't understand this part of the theory. No-one theorizes that Frog has been impersonating Tatters while Tatters dies on Dany's bed. During this period, Frog has been alone with Viserion in the abandoned pyramid. As far as Caggo and Meris are concerned, Tatters is simply missing and maybe presumed dead. What is anticipated is that, at some point in Winds after Barristan releases Archie and Gerris, Frog will fly Viserion over Meereen, streaming the tattered cloak, and signal the Windblown to switch sides from dragonback. When this happens, the Windblown will switch sides. No up-close-and-personal encounters with Caggo and Meris are involved in this scenario. There is no "magic cloak" in any version of the theory. The clue about removing the cloak to move unseen foreshadows his appearance incognito in the dragonpit as one of the 4 non-descript ordinary masked windblown. He does not need to be a chameleon with plastic features or magical glamors if he is only wearing a mask.

@1:04:00. Re. your "final question". The guards found 3 men together and assumed they were the 3 Dornishmen. Archie and Gerris, most likely, merely declined to correct their error. Even if they lied at this point, it would have been only to gain Frog a little more time. After all, Frog is still at large, they are loyal to him, and they don't want Frog arrested too. The 2 Dornishmen were then thrown in a cell, and the burnt man died on Dany's bed. Archie and Gerris are alone in a cell with time to think about and coordinate their stories. After the burnt man dies, only then does Barristan show up to question Archie and Gerris. When he asks them what happened in the Pit, they glance at each other, as if they are being questioned about this for the first time. By this time, Archie and Gerris know that the burnt man is dead, and that the burnt man's captors never learned their mistake.

Stealing a dragon, killing her soldiers... Dany would have to seek justice for what Quentyn did even if he was successful, yup. It would not be good for Dorne. What that justice would look like, it's hard to say. Quentyn is (or was) too important of a political figure for Dany to call for his head. Dany can't simply war with Dorne to get her dragon back. Fighting Dorne means losing a powerful ally and she might kill one of her children (or she might die in the attempt). Quentyn surviving means Dany has to grudgingly accept Dorne now has her dragon but is willing to fight for her... just not how she would have wanted. Doran would have to do something to basically say "Gracious Queen, Quentyn (and by extension Dorne) has greatly offended you. But now he's my first son and now a dragonrider and thus too important to face real punishment. Here's some gold, a hostages, our apologies...??" A total mess

In any event, the text disagrees with you. Frog, after seeing a man horribly killed by Viserion, stepped forward and struck Viserion full in the face with a whip, and yelled at Viserion. @11:50, you are basically arguing that if GRRM sets us up to expect Frog to fail, it means Frog will fail. What about surprising the reader? Is that not something GRRM tries to do? It might be more logical to suppose that if GRRM sets up to expect that Frog will fail, it means Frog will succeed.
@kragary
11 ай бұрын
Not really. The fates of the characters are usually pretty well foreshadowed in the books. They're only surprising if you expect their stories to go the same way stories of similar characters in fantasy and fairytales usually go, and don't pay attention to what you're actually being shown on page. In a traditional story the humble prince disguised as a beggar succeeds at every trial and gets all the prizes at the end. In this story he fails and dies a stupid and unnecessary death, and it's not a surprise because of the way his story was going. Similarly it's not going to be surprising when Doran is outsmarted by everyone, Jon is never crowned the King of anything, Westeros will love their new impostor King Aegon and hate the rightful heir Dany, Bran will continue using his magic in increasingly immoral and horrifying ways etc. Unless you expected something more traditional, that is...

Anyone who has read traditional stories knows that characters vaguely similar to heroes (In the sense that Q is vaguely similar to a hero) fail all the time. Q's fate was foreshadowed whether he succeeds or fails. The question is, which foreshadowing was the clue, and which was the red herring? Yes, GRRM does try to surprise his readers, but yes, it is also true that he plants foreshadowings, so that we can say, with 20/20 hindsight, after we have been surprised, that the surprise was foreshadowed all along. In Q's case, GRRM has set us up to expect him to fail, and then to think that he HAS failed. But if he succeeds, well, that was foreshadowed too.

They are flying around Meereen now barbecuing the corpses sent into the air by the trebuchets... and perhaps this is where they need to be. So Quentin did serve a purpose... but the mystery remains, what exactly is Doren planning and how will he respond to this setback?

Quentyn's plot line ended with his death but my conclusion is not that he served no purpose to the story. Check the Winds of Winder chapter of the video. And Doran's plot isn't a mystery either. He wants justice for his sister and her children, which means fighting the Lannisters, but he does not want a bloody senseless conflict.

@58 using Tatter's age and hair when the body is missing so much skin you can see bones? A body with such severe burns isn't going to have hair. The text clearly states nobody looked long because there body is a horror. This is the weakest part of your theory. Tatters unburned isn't going to look like Tatters burned.
@KevinPendragon
Жыл бұрын
You cannot replace the body of a short, stocky, big headed, somewhat overweight 19 year old with the body of a lean, elegant, 60 year old warrior. That's my point. I mentioned the hair because that's part of the text I was quoting. And the text never tells us it "nobody looked long". Missandei and Barristan spend significant time with the bed ridden, talking Quentyn and are convinced its him. Because he was severely burned but still short, stocky, etc.
@dblackesquire

Barristan specifically says the body has no face. He says so much flesh burned off that we can see bones. When something is in that condition, body fat matters very little. Barristan assumes this was Quentyn and never stoos to look closely. Besides this is the same Barristan who looked right at the Titans bastard and couldn't spot him without hair and beard. Now you have faith he can go all forensic files with such a burned body and a tattered prince he doesn't know well? I'm not suggesting that body is Tatters but I am suggesting we readers have no reason to trust Barristan's assumption this body is Quentyn.

New theory. He is dead. Dany gets home before his body is cleaned and bones sent home. Feels guilty about him dying. Gives him the kiss she had ‘denied’ him before. He comes back to life. Last kiss style. Given that snippet from tWoW, that sounds like something a man would plead right before pushing himself off a cliff. Like what’s his nuts from LOTR. I mean, after all that patience. He’s losing everything. Perfect lineup for that trope. And with Aegon VI possibly being fake, it even brings in the imagery of a black sail when it should have been something else to bear. In addition to the possibility of a fake out, desperate as that might be. We could be looking at a Lord Beric/Thoros situation.

I think readers wanted to believe that there was a point to the Quentyn arc. There are POV characters who are even more useless than Quentyn (particularly Areo Hotah, The Camera that Rides,) but Quentyn's story is the longest true shaggy dog story in A Song of Ice and Fire. He contributes nothing to the plot except releasing Rhaegal and Viserion, who could easily have escaped on their own or been released off-page. Even in terms of establishing story themes, Quentyn is redundant, because we've known since book 1 that this is not a world of heroic fantasy where adventures end well. Quentyn could be cut out of the series entirely, as he is in some fan-suggested alternative chapter orders for books 4 and 5, without losing anything in terms of events or in terms of themes and tone. And I don't think that was totally intentional: instead it was indicative of a systemic flaw in GRRM's whole approach to writing. When you write like a gardener, some branches are going to go the wrong way and need pruning.
@KevinPendragon
Жыл бұрын
I completely agree with your last sentence. Hell, even GRRM agrees with you because he regrets making Arys Oakheart a POV character. But I do think Quentyn's death will impact the story. It will likely be why Dorne turns against Dorne and that will buoy along Young Griff to the Iron Throne. Did we need an entirely new POV character to do that? No. It's just bad planning.

@@KevinPendragon Ever heard of the Laura Van Ryn / Whitney Cerak case? Let me ask you this: Why does GRRM have Frog survive for 3 days? Does he need to make a will? Does he need to communicate anything of any significance to anyone? Deliver a secret message to Missandei? No, GRRM has him survive for 3 days for the same reason he has everyone at Winterfell gather to see Bran & Rickon's heads on spikes. It is smoke and mirrors designed so we ASSUME he must be Quentyn -- an assumption that does not hold up to close examination as he never says anything that would tend to confirm his identity. For Bran & Rickon, a "clue" he gave us was that only Maester Luwyn had the stomach to take a closer look at the severed heads. He gives us a precisely analogous clue here, when we are told that only Missandei has any stomach to spend time with the horribly injured man. Supporters of the theory believe the author is trying to fool us because we just happened to notice him setting up the smoke and mirrors - and this is just one example. Yes we are supposed to ASSUME it is Q, but in the end, all he does is gasp out a few simple requests to an 11-year old girl in his burnt-beyond-recognition voice. Whitney Cerak tried alot harder than that to convince her caretakers she was not really Laura Van Ryn. People see what they expect to see, as Theon pointed out, and that is happening again here.

Doran gave Quentyn a totally hopeless impossible task. I think Quentyn's "plan" was really a type of suicide. He felt a failure, and that he could never return home as a failure, so he did something that was almost certain to kill him. That seemed, to him, to be less bad than continuing to always feel a failure. The poor thing. His father should never have placed him in that situation. But Quentyn would also have been unlikely to have lasted long as a king either. He seemed to know this, unlike his sister, who is clueless about just how terrible she would be as a ruler.

@38:00 No, Missandei would not address the burnt man as "Quentyn", but as "My Lord" or maybe "Prince" or whatever is correct, just as she addresses Dany as "Your Grace", and Barristan as "Honored Ser". She refers to the burnt man as "the prince" when she talks to Barristan. And you assume the burnt man would have been chatty, you are arguing against the text, which explicitly says that the burnt man only spoke a few tortured words to utter simple requests. Gasping "tortured words" (in case you missed the implication) implies it is extremely painful for him to speak (and also that his voice is probably altered). And what do you imagine he would have said? "I (gasp) am (gasp) tattered (gasp) prince", says burnt man; "Yes you sure are you poor dear thing"; thinks Missandei, "very tattered indeed". And what possible motive does he have to reveal his true identity? Does he think Missandei will treat him nicer if she realizes he is an enemy? And most of the time she's keeping him drugged up on milk of the poppy (a quasi-opiate). "Three days is too long of a time"? Dude, 3 days is nothing. It took a whole month for Laura Van Ryn's caretakers to realize she not really Laura Van Ryn, and it is not even as though she did not try to tell them. And alot of people were involved in that fiasco, not one single 11-year old girl.

i think maybe the biggest flaw to doran's dornish master plan is that he was so subtle about it and failed to train his heir/s how to actually think. quentyn possibly dying is just proof that he could not have carried the weight of the task ahead, being unable to have the common sense that the very obvious choice is to NOT engage any of the dragons by himself. if he survives, he's basically foiled a significant part of the dornish plot, unless doran has a backup plan for this. *edited for typo

I didn't want Quentin to be alive because I felt that there have to be tragic Heroes like Ned not just at the beginning, but all the way through. You made a lot of very compelling arguments. I wouldn't worry too much about people who continue to believe because that is also reflective of history itself. I love that you gave exhaustive arguments throughout focusing on every aspect. I had never considered before Quentin's continuous failure upon failure. I know that Preston has mentioned that Quentin is one of several iterations, or avatars of George and the sense I get from George is that if he were to play the hero in one of his own books, he would fail and die. Love the music as well. One small critique is that you should switch the music up a little bit with other songs of a similar nature. I like that the volume of your music and it's genre didn't interfere at all with the narrative, but instead complimented it nicely. Well done! Definitely one of the best commentaries on the books.

@52:00 "Archie and Gerris had no time to accomplish a body swap". What body swap? It was a dragon who burnt some man beyond recognition, and that took no time at all. All Archie and Gerris had to do was keep their mouths shut when the guards assumed that the man found in their company was their known associate and companion. Nine people invaded the Pit, and 5 have successfully left the scene along with two dragons. We don't know who left! We ASSUME that 5 Windlbown left, and that the burnt man is Frog; but it may be that Frog and 4 Windblown left, and the burnt man is a Windblown. Nobody is doing any body swaps in this scenario. Someone is burnt beyond recognition, and the cold hard truth is that WE DON'T KNOW WHO IT IS, because we were not there when the 5 people left. We merely ASSUME. Talking about complex body-juggling feats is nonsense. 5 people have left, and we are not sure exactly who. 4 people remain and we're not sure exactly who. We know there was enough time for 5 people to leave, because 5 people are GONE. GRRM set this scenario up on purpose because he is playing smoke and mirror games. When you see smoke and mirrors, it is reasonable to guess you are being deceived.

The last we see of him is Cat asking for Brienne’s sword, leaving it deliberately ambiguous whether she plans to kill him or free him. This is immediately made clear in the first proper chapter of the next book by starting with a Jaime POV. The fact that we see Quentyn’s body in the Barristan chapter to me highly suggests he won’t be coming back. If George wanted to suggest that Quentyn hadn’t really died I imagine he would have had a final Quentyn pov chapter right at the end of dance (as with Bran in clash).

Though obviously why would anyone trust the analyses of someone who's basically dedicated their entire life to revealing the truth in GRRMs extended works? GRRMs gifts are poisoned... On a lighter note, I do think these types of debates are particularly revealing with respect to how much the individual trusts a narrator. The majority that can't manage to see deeper, never manage to distrust their POV character, they see the information they receive as pristine, and pure. And then their gospel builds, with only the view of a (fallible) human as a concrete truth. They laugh at a deeper analyses of theme, motif, structure, tone, and can only countenance words from (usually with GRRM) a traumatised teenager as ABSOLUTE TRUTH. Its pretty laughable as literary critique.
