I don’t like buttons on transmission shifter in my Tucson. 2 reasons: it takes up too much space on the console and, sometimes my dog steps on those buttons which can be an issue (even chained to the back seat he stands up on the console!) Have a Mercedes with column shifter and had a Ford with the dial either is better to me.

I used to like the old column PRND shifters for automatics they had back in the 70's. Simple, easy to use, and standard across all manufacturers. I don't really know why they took them away, perhaps it was a styling exercise to make it look like you had a "sporty" manual, it certainly didn't make any difference to how the automatic transmission worked. They are gone and not coming back but I thought it was a good design. By the way I have owned a Mazda CX-90 PHEV for a year now and don't have any complaints about the transmission, it works fine for me.

Once had a Peugeot 404 with a manual four speed on the column. Worked fine. The placement of the stick on the transmission tunnel seems to be mainly to give a car a sports car look. In terms of function, for a domestic car, a manual on the column works just as well.

I own a CX-5 with 130K trouble free miles mechanically (just brakes, a battery and spark plugs). The infotainment stopped working awhile ago. It shuts on and off over and over during my entire drive. Mine is a first run 2017, so they probably worked that out. I too am shopping a new car. I drove the Evision and it is shockingly excellent. Coming from my Mazda, I was wowed. The seat is hard though (but so is Mazda). I want to try a lower trim to see if it is any better. I need a new car now, and the Envision would be my pick over the CX-5 simply because it has not been redesigned in 9 years!! That is way too long. I don't want to drive the outdated model since a new one is due for 2026. I guess if someone never owned one the look is new. The Envision also is a little wider and feels more spacious. A lot more knee room for the passenger too. Some don't care, but a pano roof is not even an option on the CX.5. I see a million CX-5 on the road. That is a testament to just how good it is, but I am just bored looking at it. That is my only clap back at Mazda. Don't wait 10 years to update the design because you are losing customers! The Envision exterior beats the Mazda IMO....but i bet the 2026 CX-5 will probably be amazing. I would not go top trim Avenir becasue you can get a Lexus NX 350 gas model for the same money. It is bargain in lower trims.

Old style column shifters were fine, even in Fords with a wiper stalk as the wiper stalk was much shorter and higher up. Haven't had any issues with the shifter in the Santa Fe like I thought I would, actually. The direction of the movements to shift are very logical. Worst I've done is hit park more than once, thinking I hadn't done it before taking my foot off the brake. I like the space it makes in the console more than the 2 days it took to get used to the change in shifter. I also don't get everyone's obsession with panoramic sunroofs. We have that whole big glass thing in our Santa Fe and guess what? It is NEVER opened. And when we do, passengers complain about the sun in their eyes and ask to close it. 😂

What surprises me is how high Buick is on the list of reliable vehicles. I guess since the 2014-2019 Buick Encore with the 1.4 litre turbo Ecotec and its myriad of PVC, turbo and coolant leak issues is no longer part of these surveys. We have a 2019 Encore AWD and other than it being very small which isn’t a bad thing in some cases, and the 36 mpg ( Imperial gallon ) being a little low for a tiny engine in a fairly light vehicle I’m pretty happy with ours. It’s got a very quiet interior unless you are accelerating heavily. It handles quite well and the rid3 is actually pretty good. So far “ fingers crossed “ we haven’t experienced any of those issues I mention except I’d expect at least 40 mpg ( Imperial gallon, 36 for a US gallon is a good number ).

Honda Passport question's answer: I recently purchased a 2024 Passport Trailsport (identical to the 2025) and decided to not wait for the 2026 re-design, and here's why. Honda has been systematically reducing the height of the hatch area, with the new Pilot's hatch area height being 28" on the sides, and barely touching 30" in the center of the hatch. This is a serious problem, if you need to put a 30" tall full-size dog-crate in the rear (I have dogs). The current Passport can fit the same 30" tall dog-crate, with inches to SPARE above it. I bet the 2026 Passport, will reduce the hatch area height, just like they did with the new Pilot and the new HRV etc., to the point where the *utility* aspect in an SUV is seriously compromised. Additionally, people talk up the 10-speed AT a lot, but IMHO, the 10-speed may be "smoother" (I used to have an RDX that had the 10-speed), but the current 9-speed allows better acceleration
