Thank you for this video. I thought I was looking at a lot of time and money to fix my valve. My valve was actually leaking from the plug on the hot water side. Somehow the O-ring got messed up. The valve was also in a box so I could not get a tool in to loosen and remove the plug. After watching this video I removed the top part of the valve, went to the plumbing supply store and got the O-ring I needed. Total time including going to the store less than an hour. Cost of the O-ring $1. Quick, easy and cheap. Thanks.

After watching this, just ran to the store and did the repair ourselves. Worked like a charm! (A little tweaking with this one because it was mounted in a box and the valves were too close together to fit the new piece, so we needed to loosen the back screw holding it on, but worked perfectly.) Thanks for your help!

Unfortunately the dual replacement valves I found at my local home improvement stores were a little bit smaller than my original, so I was not able to swap the upper valve bodies. Before going to the trouble of removing the valve, compare the old and new valves' dimensions by removing the washer hoses and lining up the new valve's hose threaded end with the old to compare the valve body widths.

As an FYI, the externals of the valves only LOOK universal. However, the internals can vary wildly. I recently tried to replace an Oatey shutoff from 1994 with a new Oatey, and the internal channel is shaped very differently. When I turned the water main back on, despite the new shutoff valve being snugged down with the washers, it sprayed all over creation. I strongly suggest you inspect the interior of the old and new valves to make sure they are shaped similarly.

Well... I have a 25 year old Oatey dual valve that is leaking so bought a new Oatey valve to try this, but the "universal" fittings at the pipe end are a smaller diameter than those that came with the new value. When I replace the new valve onto the old fittings it leaks like crazy at that junction. I went out and bought a different brand twin valve and its fitting size was a different even than each of the two others, somewhere between the size of the old and new Oatey, and also leaks like crazy when attached to the old fittings. These values are not "universal".

Unfortunately, this is incorrect. The valves are not always identical in construction; they maybe very close, but that doesn't get the job done! That's what happened to me...I thought it would be a simple swap, but the machining between the old and new was different. Even using new seals, the new valve leaked where it mated the old seats.

Do you put the new gasket on the pipe before you thread the new piece on? Or does it have inside the new piece, and it seals itself? That's the only part I dont get. Referring solely to the only o ring he removes in the video.

What size are the o rings in the Oatey shut off valve please? I am referring to the particular O-rings that are in the stem of the individual hot and cold water valves. My hot water side is leaking, and I am absolutely UNABLE to remove the stainless steel screw from the top of the hot water side. So, I'm trying to replace the internal o-rings to see whether this might stop the leak, before I hire a plumber to completely cut out the entire Oatey box, which will require demo-ing out my wall and re-doing PVC and water supply pipework.

@halconnen1483
2 жыл бұрын
Hello Joel. I'm sure you've resolved the issue now that it's a couple of years since you asked. But just in case or for anyone else with the same question, as long as you can remove the other end from the washing machine you should be fine. If your valve is a pair like in the video and you can unscrew the other line, you could first cut the hose with a pair of snips first at the supply end (after shutting off the water line which for me is the water main) with a bucket underneath. Then place the cut end of the hose in the bucket, slide the bucket to as close to under the connection to the washing machine, and then snip the hose near the washing machine side to get most of the water that was left in the hose off your floor. If it's single valve (like mine) you leave the hose attached to the part of the valve you're tossing.
@seigeengine
7 жыл бұрын
I hate to break this to you, but nobody replaces their hoses every six months. Even turning off the valves is a little ridiculous, assuming your washing machine isn't stupidly located. If at all possible, washing machines should be located in a water-resistant environment with adequate drainage to remove water should leaks of any variety happen.
@binnsbrian

seigeengine. I hate to break this to you, but most people don't have their washing machines located in a water-resistant environment with adequate drainage to remove water should leaks of any variety happen. That's why Tom's advice to turn off the valves is good advice.
@HomeCraftChronicles

Yes, in a perfect world, your washer should be set up in a well draining and water resistant area. However, most people don't have that luxury. That is why is a good idea to tien of the valve. It's just advice. Nothing i can do to make you take it. And the replacement should be 6 years for the hoses, not months.

BlackCat2 Sounds like you have 2 seperate lines for your supply. You may want to think about installing a laundry valve like this at some point just for piece of mind. What I want to know is why I'm reading/seeing/hearing that these valves fail so often. My house is new construction (7 years old). It's a REALLY SIMPLE VALVE FFS. Is it just that the efftards making stuff now a days are that incompetent? Quality control asleep on the job? Or is it because it's from China(mine is a Symmons)? It's not like this valve is subject to extreme temps, it's rediculous that it shouldn't last a minimum or 30 years. Ok I'm done bitching now.
