Today's quick fix is a mystery Gameboy card. It doesn't boot, so let's go ahead and pop it open and see what's going on... Under the microscope, we can see some black VIAs. VIAs turn black as moisture eats away at them, rendering their connections broken. Odds are this is why it's not booting. I like to remove all the components to see if there's any damage underneath them. With all the components out of the way, we can now repair the damaged traces using jumper wire. I spotted this broken trace by eye and tested it with a (multi)meter to confirm that it is infact broken. Since one end of the trace is near a cluster of VIAs, I'll use some insulated wire to jump it. Now we can clean up all the old solder and put the chips back on. Let's go the extra mile for the owner of this card and solder in a new battery: that way they can play for, I don't know...10 more years? I spray the majority of these repairs with conformal coating to protect them from future damage, and to hold the jumper wires firmly in place.
