Couple of things! I was surprised at how much interest this buggy is generating. Given it is a budget RTR and not something my channel is known for, I didn't expect many views and very few of my regular viewers to be considering buying one! And as a result of that, I feel I should give my honest opinion on this buggy and a little issue that I'm experiencing. If you haven't already, check out my running video for an idea of how I ran the Sand Master for it's first 3 battery packs (nimh, BTW) and an update video where I talk about an issue I'm having. Normally, I'd just put it down to a one-off, but as it seems other people have had similar experiences, I thought it would be useful to others who are either thinking about or bought one of these budget RTR's. I have ordered a replacement spur and pinion and will test again. Hopefully that will fix this minor issue. It is a little disappointing, because otherwise for the money this is a whole lot of RC fun!

I actually ordered on last night. I had to see what it was all about and here I was able to get it for $147 shipped to me so not a bad price at all!!! It should be here next week and I can see first hand but from you video I am already excited to get it!

For an entry level RTR I think it is ok. For similar money here you could pick up an Tamiya XB DT-03 plus bearing kit. With the Tamiya you'd get everything you would need to run, including battery and charger (though most people probably wouldn't use either!). The Sand Master benefits from metal gears and metal drivetrain components. The Kyosho's transmitter is better than the Tamiya's too. But then there's hop ups. There are so many to choose from for the DT-03. Overall, I'd have to recommend a DT-03 for someone looking for an entry level 2WD RTR from the likes of Tamiya/Kyosho.

I am very happy that this buggy is back in stock! Well, I personally own a Kyosho Axxe (Ez Series) and it has been difficult for me to find the gearbox for this cart (I have seen the differential on eBay) but I am concerned about the gear compatibility of this sandmaster 2.0 with its brothers ( Nexxt,monster tracker,axxe) in particular a pair of small gears that are connected to the differential. many users of the Ez series complain about the poor spare parts service (it is a great buggy) Greetings friend
@KaiCityRC

Over here spares for Kyosho's aren't (usually) that hard to find while the buggy is in production. Older models are a different matter. So far I've not had any issues finding spares for my Fazer Mk2 chassis (another RTR from Kyosho) but that chassis is very popular. As the Sand Master has only just been released it is probably too early to tell how easy (or hard) it will be to find spares for this buggy. Having said that, the two gears you mentioned appear to be the only two components in the gearbox that do not have a part number! 🤔

@@KaiCityRC thanks for responding friend! I also have a kyosho fazer mk2 (mad van) and personally I have not had problems finding parts for this chassis either, the EZ Series has previous models such as the sandmaster, nexxt, monster tracker and monster tracker 2.0) All of them used the EZ-009 differential and the ez-110 or ez-010b gearbox (for the sandmaster 2.0 the differential is the ez-209 part and the Ez-210 gearbox) but I don't know if they are similar... .I love your content! Yes, though in all honesty for a first 2WD RTR buggy (from Tamiya, Kyosho etc) the XB DT-03 and bearing kit is probably a better buy. There's certainly a lot more option parts for the DT-03 and they can be had for similar money. 👍 But if you're like me and already own a small fleet of DT-02's, then the Sand Master is an interesting alternative! 😅

The BBX has is a much better buggy in many ways. It is also much more expensive! 😥 But they do look very similar. I was tempted to take the BBX along for a comparison, but a relatively expensive and highly detailed kit vs an entry level RTR would perhaps not be the best comparison. 😅

Welcome back, David! Always enjoy your videos. I have an unrelated to this video question for you. I bought a PRS1RM and am in the build. Do you have a recommended pinion/spur combination for a 10.5T motor? Just curious if you played around with the gearing and had a setup you liked the best. Thanks.
@KaiCityRC
5 ай бұрын
My S1RM is underpowered, running a 17.5T brushless setup with gearing around 8:1 (I don't recall the exact pinion/spur combination I used). This was done for a couple of reasons. To allow me to meet running regulations at the circuit I frequent (and also so I could more easily compare it to my Dirt Master and Genova). And also so I could run the Hobbywing Justock ESC without a fan. On the track I run at, I can run for 15 minutes straight and the esc/motor barely get warm to the touch. But the S1RM can handle a lot more than that! Which spur/pinion combo will work for you will depend on so many factors - esc, motor, batteries, track size/grip/layout etc. A good starting point would be check the recommended gear ratios for the motor you plan to use and go from there. 👍

I was surprised how quickly these were in stock in the United States. Mine is also quite bouncy in the rear. I haven't taken the shocks apart yet, but it seems like they may of forgotten to add shock oil.
@KaiCityRC
5 ай бұрын
Yeah, I noticed that. I pulled the gearbox apart as it sounded very loud and I thought they'd used that terrible grease they apply to the pre-built gearboxes on the 2WD legendary series buggies. But it turns out it was very well greased from the factory. I may also have a look inside the shocks. I suspect they might just need some thicker fluid.

Thx for showing this! I really love the looks of it. But not having a slipper clutch means one should probably not upgrade even to a mild brushless system which is unfortunate.
@KaiCityRC
5 ай бұрын
I guess it is possible that Kyosho might offer a slipper as an upgrade at some point. But, given this is an entry level RTR I think it is unlikely. Looking at the gearbox, there maybe a way to adapt a slipper clutch to fit. Despite the lack of a slipper, I feel the Sand Master is quite good value for the money. I'll report back once I've had chance to run it.

Probably not. There's no slipper and some of the gears (spur) aren't the best quality. Though a lot depends on how it's driven.

I had one of the kyosho axxe's which shared the same running gear and I am sad to say they they are awful cars. The gearbox is made of cheese and the spur gears was so wobbly and imprecise that it stripped after a single run. The diff gears lasted 2 runs and to replace the diff you needed to buy the whole gearbox assembly. I love kyosho but these are utter garbage
@KaiCityRC
5 ай бұрын
Interesting to hear your experience. When I first tested mine I noticed it sounded a lot louder than I expected. So I dismantled the gearbox and diff. The diff looks to be pretty strong - all metal, though only two small bevel gears. Fair bit of play in the setup, so I packed it full of thicker grease. Not the greatest design to be sure! Adding shims didn't really help. The pinion is a terrible plastic push on type, so I've ordered a metal one. After reading your comment, I had a look at the spur and sure enough, there is a noticeable wear ridge on one side! Clearly not the best material. But finding an alternative might be a little tricky. Little disappointing given how little it has been used. Will keep an eye on it and report back. I was looking at the spare parts list. You can buy the diff gear set part #EZ209 that includes all the diff parts (case, bevels gears, outdrives etc) everything needed to rebuild the diff. It's a little expensive at ¥1,900. But you can also buy part #EZ205 "Diff Gear Set EZ Series" that comes with just the bevel gears and changes to a 4 small bevel gear specification. It's much cheaper at ¥880. Someone also mentioned not being able to buy the two smaller gears that sit between the spur and diff. These aren't sold separately unfortunately, so you've got no choice but to buy the whole gearbox assembly. #EZ210. It comes with all the gearbox cases, those two small gears, bearings and hardware. Thanks for commenting.

I'm putting together a follow up video. After its first run I stripped the gearbox down to try find the source of a loud noise. The internal gears are fine, but the spur has noticeable wear/damage! I thought maybe I'd just been unlucky and got a badly assembled example, but after reading your comment, there is a possibility this is quite a common issue...😥
