Dear Dianne, I really appreciate that you resist offering a formula for how to approach painting clouds, fog or anything else. You constantly direct the learner back to her, or his own devices, vision, value, form etc. You show how there are no short-cuts and how the only way to learn (anything really, not just painting) is to learn to critically study, to think for oneself and to begin to trust one's own abilities. (Then we'll make mistakes, but each one will be valuable since they will bring us closer to finding one's own answer to, as in this quick tip, how to paint fog.) You are a true inspiration! Keep doing what you do so well! Best, Maria (Sweden)

Hi, Dianne, I've been painting for many years but never a foggy scene. I recently took some nice photos of foggy fall scenes from the road. I have always painted what I see, but wasn't sure how to start this. Thank you so much, this was very helpful! I always enjoy your gentle, yet very informative videos.

Perfect theme for the month of October thank you! We get a lot of fog here on the west coast, and I think it is amazing how much it can change a view that you look at all the time into one of intrigue. I have a video idea, how to paint fire. I have found it very tricky, and am hoping to get better at it, because it sure is a fun thing to paint. It seems to be so changeable as to what is going on in the background, and also whether it is seen in light or dark conditions.

Hi Dianne. Great tip. Question. Do you ever use transparent white like zinc white? If so how and when do you use it. I am learning oils but have painted in acrylics for a few years and use it to layer over an area to create a haze or fog. Do you do this in oils as well? Maybe this could be a quick tip on when and how to use different whites? Thank you.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction

Zinc white has the reputation of cracking with age, so for several years now, I have used only Titanium White. Some folks recommend lead whites, but I try to stay away from paints containing lead.

You have very good tutorials. I love them. But, this tutorial is less than complete. Fog is more than just value and hard to soft line changes. Fog is a layering of neutral highlight-type colors that decreases what you see in the painting. The layering of obstructive neutral colors (i.e., different levels of OPACITY) over the subject matter is what creates the soft to hard lines while also shifting the values ... and maintaining both the visible and inferred subject matter of the painting.
@IntheStudioArtInstruction
5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your observations, Joe, but I do believe we are saying the same thing - more or less. As realistic painters, we are translating/interpreting a three-dimensional world onto a two-dimensional surface. To do that, we must use two-dimensional tools. Value differences, hard-soft-lost edges and color differences are three tools that make that possible. As I say in the video, I am not giving a formula, but a way to observe. The fog might be obscuring the subject matter (three-dimensionally), but what does the artist do to translate/interpret that?

All I know is, the way everything is described in this video helped me paint outside of my comfort zone and I like my mist! This also teaches beginners how to look at value and colors in reference photos so we can always amp it up but I know my turned out great.

Thank you so much! I love that you get us to become critical observers. How does the value change? I didn't realize I c ok I'll make a neutral with 2 complimentary colors! So cool!! And then just to realize how soft or non existent the edges are in the fog helped too. I like how you said we need to paint what we see. It's not that we know it's green or a tree.
