May I suggest putting a plate covered with foil under your vise to protect your desk? You can toss the foil out afterwards & not have to scrape out burnt material afterward. It would also be good to have ample ventilation, since burning plastic like poly or Antron fumes can be toxic. That said, the burn method is a much faster way of removing materials from the hook.

I just take a razor blade or a dollar store razor knife..and strip em. :) Much quicker.

LMAO @ you're not going to burn the temper out of your hooks unless you turn it red" Better stick to tying instead of pretending to know metallurgy... Is it really that hard to slide a razor blade or exacto along the back of the hook and cut everything...and save the temper to boot.. ones I have cut took less time than it did to watch that burn.

I never had a problem with the hook afterwards. Thank you very much for your input, I'm sure it will be helpful to my viewers. They can decide weather to burn or cut. Sincerely Thanks

You have got to be kidding me. Carbon steel does not loose its temper until 572°F or 300°C for you techno nerds. With this said it then has to be rapidly increased to around 400°C. Even if this recipe is fallowed to the letter it becomes problematic with such small diameter wire. I’ve scorched hundreds of hooks and have yet to have one break. Have a great day.

@@jeffsmith3941 LMAO!!!! You both have no idea how fast those little hooks heat up from a flame.....nor how hot the lighter and the thread etc. burn. Do a search and check it out, since you two think you know....

@@rider660r All I’m saying is the man is a famous fly fisherman who has posted hundreds of videos detailing how to tie flies. Many of his videos seven I believe deal in how to save time and money. Being a famous fly fisherman requires a certain amount of large fish being caught. With that simple statement alone we (you, I and everyone else who watches him) can deduce he has not in any shape or capacity caused hooks to loose there temper or he would be loosing large fish due to hook breakage. So, since he is famous and since he is a better fly tyer than me I’m going to have to believe he wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize the next big fish being landed ie taking the temper from the hooks causing them to be weak. But you do you, you can chew it off with your sharp little teeth for all I care.
