It’s sad because this movie had potential and Namari’s character would been more of an impactful character if we had more screen time with her. When she sees Sisu for the first time it’s like her child innocence comes back to her and she just stands there frozen in awe as if she was her dragon nerd self from before. Even after you can hear the joy in her voice when she talks to her mother about the dragon only for her to be shot down by the harsh reality and her mother. This movie would’ve been a great short series, with a prologue then five episodes centered on the five different nations. It explored a lot of interesting concepts and made this dope setting, it just needed the time to truly flesh them out. 20-30 minute episodes that spotlight the specific lands they went to would’ve worked better to immerse us. And I feel like more time was needed to answer and flesh out some of the relationships. Like Raya slowly trusting her allies instead of just gaining their trust, the fact that the other nations actually held Fang accountable for what happened (which was only brought up at the very end), and how the other nation’s criticisms of Heart’s prosperity were actually fair. There was a lot of opportunity for some interesting conversation that just wasn’t there

I took a screenwriting class last year for my college courses and the biggest thing I learned was the concept of show the audience - don't tell them. It's super demeaning to the audience to tell them everything - and it gets really boring too. Masters of storytelling in cinema know how to visually tell a story, not by characters explaining everything to the audience. It sounds like this movie really suffered from that, what a disappointment. It looked really cool!
@dakat5131

Seems like a lot of media goes to one extreme or the other- either it explains everything to the point where it's a "yeah I probably would have picked that up if they showed it in action. Why are you telling me this?" OR explains nothing but has key moments relying on things they neither showed nor told about and you're just expected to know for the scene to have any impact.

There is a word for that issue. It is called an "info dump". And it sounds just as bad as it is. It is just a giant dump truck that just drowns you with information at the start of a film or show and it is just as unpleasant as the name suggest.

“Avatar if they tried to condense it into a movie” is exactly the vibes I got when I watched it too. I wanted to spend more time learning about how Spine became desolate, their culture of (presumably) glory and family first, how Fang are assassins, about the wildlife, about the stereotypes that all the tribes think of when they think of Heart, about why everyone got frozen in a praying pose, except for in the last few minutes of the movie for some reason?? More time establishing the power of trust, while showing that trust still has to be earned/deserved rather than jumped into recklessly and without reason.

Not something I expected because that might be a lot to fit into a two hour film. Imo it was well executed for the time they had, and the right decision to focus on one story to get through the whole world. I agree with you about the praying pose though, wish they’d explain that. I was also frustrated about the main cast not being forced into it... plot convenience I guess.

The praying position for me is the position of give up something to someone so would be a "trust them" position in the context. @@onepunch2310 Totally agree with you. But when the creators go out of their way to say that they made a representation, that the actual members of that representation feel is inaccurate or a lazy representation. How would one fix that without a good story? I could imagine that those of that group would see it as the creators just trying to appeal to them as an audience without really trying to represent them and then calling it representation to get more people to watch. People outside of the group wouldn't really care as they don't know the culture, but the people of the representation, that they claim to be making, certainly would.

Everyone loved that movie because even though people have wanted a black princess no one demanded it on social media or pressured Disney. Tiana and all of the characters in the movie all had personalities and characters development and the story was good and something you could watch again and laugh at. When representation is done because someone thought of a character and made them it always was a hit. None of the old cartoons felt pushy or political and that’s why people will always prefer them over today’s shows.

It was a story about trust, but it gives zero reasons why she should trust the girl who betrayed her (leading to the practical death of her father(aka trauma)), proceeded to hunt her down for the rest of her life, actively attacked and threatened her, and then betrayed her again (Sisu's death). Then the movie had the completely awful idea of "Hey, forget all the awful things this girl has done to you, forget she has never apologized, shown remorse, or offered any sort of explanation, you need to take the high road, and not only forgive her, but you need to trust this chick who has literally not once ever given you any reason to trust her. And that is just a TERRIBLE message to send Hey kids, your boyfriend may betray you, beat the sh*t out of you, and never ever give you a reason to trust him, but YOU should take the "high road" and forgive him, and date him more because you should trust everyone, even those who actively harm you." My main issue with this movie is the villian’s character arc. They keep trying to make the movie about forgiveness and trust, and this chick stabs people in the back at EVERY turn. Even at the very end (spoiler), she tries to abandon everyone’s stone corpses to save herself, until she realizes it’s too late to run. I can tell they tried to make them sympathetic based off the scene framing, but their actual actions were more sus than Zuko in ATLA Edit: yeah, Raya didn’t kill anyone. If anything, her actions were too slow to save Sisu. The other chick got a precise shot to the heart from a decent distance and her finger resting on the trigger. You don’t do that by mistake.

The moment where the other girl was blaming Raya for Sisu's death rubbed me wrong in so many ways, as she was deflecting blame onto somebody else for her own actions. She was the one pointing the crossbow at Sisu, she was the one about to pull the trigger. Accountability is so much more of an important message than trusting others in these times, especially when the country this movie was made in has the highest amount of gun violence in the world. Somebody ought to have taught that girl crossbow safety. Don't point it at someone unless your intention is to kill.

I liked this movie while watching it, and had a few laughs along the way. However, I definitely agree there are glaring problems with it. First off, Sisu is a really strange character and her face seriously looks like Kate from the Alpha & Omega movies which is... definitely not a compliment. She does not fit the color palette of the rest of the film at all, and looks overly goofy - like she was created just with the hope of selling the hell out of stuffed toys. Second, the whole film feels oddly rushed and a little silly plot-wise for something that is obviously trying to be on the more serious side. We just fly by all the villages/lands - so much so that you know they were just struggling to pack it all in. There were also a few weird moments where the scene suddenly cuts and fades into another entirely different one, which just felt very abrupt and strangely unpolished for a Disney movie. The baby and monkeys could have been cut and nobody would have ever known they were gone. All the characters felt so bland, and the villains were pretty random. I also HATE, HATE that Sisu’s family never said a word - like what. They couldn’t have a cute reunion where they all group hug or something? It is a beautiful film and I do appreciate what they accomplished with it, but it also could’ve been much better IMHO. There are some glaring flaws

Villains were always the best part of Disney movies and they always had the best songs, and they just completely dropped it. Instead it is the same generic hero's mom or parents are perfect and that is why Raya is. Namaari's mom is evil, that's why Namaari appears evil. The fact that Namaari and Raya shared really only their interest in dragons made it feel hollow and really bland. There should have been some deep rooted shared bond between them to give more life to the unlikely friendship. Like maybe Namaari's dad died in a very sad way, and Namaari and Raya bond over the loss of their perspective parents but the movie never goes into anything like that. yeah i feel like theres definitely sth like a “parent manipulating their child and moulding them into someone they wants them to be” here but it isnt much presented or fleshed out. like people arent just going to understand how controlled namaari feels without any explanation. iirc she was literally trembling when she asked raya to hand sisu over and said “i never wanted it to come to this” after the fight, sth along those lines, she wasnt willing to do what she was ordered to do but the movie didnt show much of it

I actually thought they did that part alright. The chief of Fang was focused on trying to do what's best for her people, including salvaging their reputation, by any means necessary, and Namaari was trying to do the same because she thought she had to do it that way - and it seems like they would've been justified to some degree given the world history there. I thought they did a did a decent job showing that, and showing that Namaari was conflicted about it once she realized Sisu was back and what that meant. Dropping your old ways doesn't just come overnight. I actually thought that was one of the better-written elements of the movie.
@aerialpunk

@@rat3138 I didn't get that vibe at all. Namaari's mom wasn't manipulative or trying to make Namaari someone she wasn't, she was teaching her daughter to lead, and they way they had kept themselves afloat was by being smart and kind of cutthroat - and given the history of everyone, it probably wasn't a wrong way of doing things. And Namaari only turned from that when she realized Sisu was back and how that changed everything. Her mom wanted to bring them together too, but she'd been playing the game so long that she still wanted to do it in a way that her people would go from villains to heroes. She saw Namaari as being too earnest and not maximizing their benefit from the situation, as she thought was necessary. Namaari went to do what was supposed to be right, but she was wavering because she knew deep down that it wasn't the best option. It wasn't about parental manipulation at all, it was about choices, and the discordance between what she had grown up with as being an actually necessary attitude, and the potential for a totally different new option. I actually thought that aside from Raya and Sisu, the Fang chief lady and Namaari were some of the more understandable characters in the movie. It could've been a little more fleshed out, like a lot of the movie could've been, but that element was done okay.

My main issue is with Namaari. She was fine until the end where she said Raya was also responsible for Sisu's death. Like? The trigger was already halfway pulled, she would've shot Sisu regardless; Raya felt that she had to do something so she did. It was only a matter of time until Sisu would be killed...and then when we see Namaari again, she's all pressed because her mom got turned into stone and is now also angry?? Like...you literally could've stopped everything right then and there but you decided to pull the trigger and kill Sisu...you're mad over something you caused lmao so stupid - had to knock off a few points in my rating of the movie just for that :/

I actually liked the movie quite a bit until that moment. My blood boiled hearing her say that. Like that was practically gaslighting Raya. Tbh, I felt like they could've done so much more with the dragons. Sisu felt a bit like one of those charecters where she's so nice and good that it's in ur face and kinda makes you hate her more than love her. I thought that since her siblings had different powers that they could have used dragons from actual myths that can come from all the different kingdoms. And I completely agree that the dragons design were lacking
@nickjoy6389

I thought they were going to have powers that actually made sense to the terrains of the different kingdoms. There was just too much that needed to be explained and fleshed out. It was not a bad movie, it just left too much for the audience. I also agree with Sisu being too nice, especially at the crossbow scene. I think that Sisu telling her brother and sister story of trust at that scene would’ve been a better placement. You also get a chance to distract ?Nimaya? And have raya try to restrain her and that’s where the crossbow goes off. Idk just a thought 😂

I'd LOVE to see essentially a remake of their old movie the Black Cauldron but way more fleshed out, less boring, and with characters that have more depth to them. Objectively speaking, the animation was the best part of this movie. Literally halfway through the movie, I thought to myself, "This is going by too quickly; it would do so much better as a show, where it can take the time it needs to tell the complete story, and properly develop the characters." As-is, this feels like a movie that was made to summarize an animated show; it introduces all the characters and kingdoms, and it establishes the basic goals of those characters and kingdoms, but you don't get nearly enough from just this movie. It's not bad; it just could've been much better, in my opinion.

When I first watched it and thought “Wow, I was a bit disappointed” I felt like I was wrong too. It lacks the "Disney magic" Disney right now focuses so much on visuals, aesthetic and "marketing representation", that they are lacking the most basic things: A compelling story and charismatic characters. I didn't care about Raya, I didn't care about the dragon and I didn't care about the people. I feel like Disney got so stuck on Rey, they just don't know how to make charming female characters. They all feel mostly the same, and I just don't like them And a good score is lacking too. There's no good Disney movie that lacks a good instrumental soundtrack. All classic Disney soundtracks are completely different and unique. Why do they all sound like pop now?

Thank you for putting my main issue I had with the movie into words! I was interested in the premise, the world and themes somewhat (and the art of course) when I saw the first marketing stuff about the movie. Then I saw the Elsa dragon (I guess Sisu was called that because of eyes + frozen colours) and I realized that Disney‘s priorities probably aren’t on the movie itself. But I was still interested enough and willing to see it. Then the introduction flashback exposition just went on and on and on and was wasting screen time before later on never slowing down from the pacing enough to just let the story and world breathe, not exactly making it easy to enjoy. Then the issues you mentioned became very noticeable to the point that I personally was in a very bad mood a third in. Then at the Sisu Credit scene (at the halfway point I think), my social anxiety got triggered and went through the roof so I personally got one too much there and I quit watching the movie because I knew I couldn’t enjoy it anymore + some of my friends were still watching and I didn’t want to put what they could still enjoy down by accident with my comments. So... there is that...

I would argue that the original TRON is a good Disney movie without a good soundtrack. I can't remember any of its sound except character lines but I can remember the Imperial March, or most of the TRON: Legacy soundtrack, or Moana. TRON is already an outlier in a lot of things, but I would argue that it works very well on a plot-character-theme-setting level, visual level (minus the limitations of 1980s, but without TRON there wouldn't be Toy Story), acting and production... but not audio. Despite my opinion I would actually like to hear some feedback on TRON and @MeroMeroDance 's theory on Disney movies and soundtrack.
