Thank You for the simple explanation. I have asked fellow quilters several times what quilt as you go is. Their response has usually made me feel stupid. I thought it included the back and just couldn't figure out how anyone would finish a quilt that way. Now I know. Thank You.
@WendiGratz

There are other QAYG techniques that include the back - but those require adding fabric strips to cover your seams - which I find really tedious to do. One day I decided to try it without the backing and see what happens - and it was so easy! Now it's how I do all my quilts that will be machine quilted. I still love hand quilting (if I do big stitch quilting) and those tops I piece the traditional way.

I'm only beginning my very first quilt, so I still know very little about quilting. This technique seems so easy and much more manageable than feeding a full size quilt through a machine. Aside of the continuity of stitching from one block to the next that you might lose with this technique, is there any reason why traditional quilting would be better? Does quilt-as-you-go change the feel of the quilt in the end since the batting isn't continuous? P.S. I love your videos and I hope you are planning to continue them.
@WendiGratz
9 жыл бұрын
aeblakey I love it for exactly the reasons you mention. It's VERY easy and so much more manageable. Plus it's very satisfying to build a quilt this way because you get truly finished blocks as you go. Some people don't care for it because you lose the continuity between blocks that you mentioned. Some people use the quilting to visually tie those background blocks together - which can be really beautiful - but it's not really an issue with the kind of quilts I make. Also - some people don't like that the back of the quilt is just a simple grid. They like seeing all the dense quilting on the back as well. I don't notice any difference in the final feel of the quilt - especially after it's been washed and dried once. I use cuddle fleece on the back though, which may effect things. The individual blocks might be easier to "feel" with a thinner quilting cotton on the back. The series definitely continued - there are a bunch of videos in there now. :-)

@rourri
8 жыл бұрын
question for you... when you join 2 rows of the cat blocks that you QAYG, how is that bulk handled at each seam? Like you said you would have normally pressed to 1 side or the other then nested each seam so the "butted" up creating a seemless line. But for this, for the next row (if the blocks work out being on top of one another, do you have to trim any excess to get it to lay flat?
@WendiGratz
8 жыл бұрын
+rourri I just press the seams open and have found that the bulk is (surprisingly) not even noticeable. It helps that 100% cotton batting is usually on the thin side. I don't trim any excess. If you're worried about it (or if you fin that your brand of batting leaves more bulk than you'd like) you can use a wider stitch on the final quilting. I do that sometimes just for fun and it really compresses those seams. You can see more about the quilting here. www.shinyhappyworld.com/2016/04/tips-for-quilting-a-cuddle-fleece-back-video-tutorial.html

Hi Wendi, I did this and found that my block shrunk after quilting it. I wonder do you quilt a bigger block and then square it smaller or do you square them before and then join the resulting sizes?
@WendiGratz
8 жыл бұрын
I do recommend that now. Your block will shrink a bit after you quilt it - the amount depends on how dense your quilting is. More dense quilting = more shrink. Now I recommend cutting all my blocks 11 inches square, then trimming them to 10 1/2 inches square after quilting and applique so that when you sew them together they're perfect and go together super easy. :-) I've created a post here (www.shinyhappyworld.com/2016/03/quilt-as-you-go-everything-you-need-to-know.html) that pulls together all the most up to date info about the methods I use.

Hi Wendy Would I have to add an inch to my blocks in order to QAYG. I am currently piecing my blocks as per a pattern. I am sure the pattern did not add the 1/4 inch seams to the blocks, If I quilted like this my blocks would become smaller? I am new to quilting, and would love to try this.
@WendiGratz
8 жыл бұрын
+Tara Manna Most patterns do include the 1/4 inch seam allowance. The blocks do become a tiny bit smaller after you quilt. The more dense your quilting is, the more it will "shrink" your blocks. I like to cut mine a bit bigger, then quilt, then trim them down to the exact size the pattern calls for.

I've got a video here showing how to join the QAYG blocks. www.shinyhappyworld.com/2016/04/how-to-join-quilt-as-you-go-blocks-video-tutorial.html And one here showing how I quilt it. www.shinyhappyworld.com/2016/04/tips-for-quilting-a-cuddle-fleece-back-video-tutorial.html That one is specifically addressing quilting with a cuddle fleece back, but the demo I'm using is a QAYG quilt, so that should help you. I've got a more general lesson about layering a quilt sandwich here. www.shinyhappyworld.com/2011/05/quilting-how-to-layer-a-quilt-sandwich.html The process is just the same with QAYG, except you're not layering the batting into your quilt sandwich because it's already part of the top layer. Hope those help!

I am going to try this. I have only found batting that is about 90% cotton. Will that work?
@WendiGratz

I wouldn't chance it. You really need your iron at a cotton setting to press those seams open and that will melt any polyester in the batting. You could use a press cloth to prevent it, but that will end up being a major pain in the butt for the whole quilt.

Yes - but that's a lot of very tedious, fussy work that I really don't enjoy. I've found that if I use a thin cotton batting (I use Warm & Natural in all my quilts) it presses nice and flat. I'm also quilting over those seam lines, which compresses any extra bulk even more.
