Holy quilted maple batman... Absolutely beautiful. I just picked up an Ibanez rg5320. It has an African mahogany body and the it has crazy figuring like i haven't seen on maple before. It's an exotic mix of quilt/flame.

It’s funny people don’t believe it’s real wood. I received a quilted maple log a few years ago, and I still have a few small pieces left. I made a conference table for Wood Mizer with 3 of the slabs. Beautiful lumber!

I imagine Derek like the George Hurst character in Deadwood. Out in the woods with a nose for the color.

when I first began playing (mid-70's), "quilt" wasn't yet in vogue; I remember Steve Helgeson/"Moonstone guitars" featured quilt tops, on 335-style guitars...I'd see his b/w ads in "Guitar Player"...I thought the "quilt" was some kind of process/manufacturing! By the late 70's, Carvin was making quite a name for their guitars, many of which featured figured/quilted maple, figured koa and such.....then came PRS, and it has been quilt-madness ever since!

I thought 7A was mastergrade. I just ordered a custom guitar and the invoice says 7A quilted maple top 7A pale moon ebony fretboard

@@kimball_hardwoods interesting, because I've heard paul read smith and jeff kiesel refer to a top as 7a and Jon Cruz from the fender custom shop mention it as well. So do guitar builders have there own separate grading system from wood suppliers? And by the way I love your videos. I've always wondered what figured woods looked like in raw form. Very interesting to see

@@JacobJ265 maple grading system has been in place since before PRS ect. They are using those slang terms to let people know the product is master grade basically
