This tree is known as the quiver tree, or Kokerboom. It hails from the rocky hills next to the Orange River between Namibia and South Africa, and forms quiver tree forests in places. It's scientific name is Aloe dichotoma, and it is a tree aloe that grows very slowly. The main subspecies shown here, dichotoma, is listed as vulnerable; ramossisima is endangered, and pillansii is critical. Quiver trees are farmed in the American Southwest for their landscaping value; as they grow slow and are rare, these trees command hefty prices. Kokerbooms can live for hundreds of years.
