Yeah, that whole story is messed up, especially with the rituals and praying for the child to be a boy, and rejecting the fact the child is a girl. I think they were hoping by doing all of that, as weird as it sounds, they thought they could make the child a reincarnation of the deceased FIL. Also, WTF with OP's husband telling her to play along and his family will get over it in time. I highly doubt that would've happened, as they've blatantly made clear they'd treat the little girl as a boy. Thinking about it, it would probably be just as messed up if the child was a boy. They'd probably literally worship the child as if he's the FIL. Constantly ask him questions like if he remembers anything from his past life with them. Maybe even get angry with him when he grows up and has a completely different personality to the FIL, so they'd try and make him do things and have interests in everything the FIL used to.

I am not excusing them and I just think that it may very well be the truth, but if this is the case, then it is on the parents and the kid who bullies to find other ways to get their feelings out. Nothing ever comes out from being that type of person who perpetuates the cycle that they go through so another unrelated person has to suffer. I spoke to some of my ex bullies years later. Some of them apologized and explained that they had issues with their own gender and sexual identity, which i do understand. They were the ones who came to me to apologize, not the other way around, and some of them got bullied by people and understood how it felt to be in my shoes. I forgave them, because they took the time to remember me to make amends even if time flew by. The others, I have heard some stuff and, I am not even sure this is true but, it seems the leftover bullies ended up in jail or killed because they acted stupid. In a way, they also got what they deserved. Life sometimes has a way to punish people for their own actions.

Suggesting a reincarnation. Ofcourse this is after the baby is born and the gender is known. Not sure what culture they are from, but It's probably why the family is so delusional. It's clear from their behavior that if OP stays in this marriage, her daughter will be treated horribly by the in-laws and the husband will do nothing to stop it. Last story: Every one on the husband’s said of the family needs counseling to deal with their grief and boundary smashing. Yikes. Can you imagine if OP let’s this go, figures it’ll be better once the baby is born and in a couple years she has a son? Can you imagine what life would be like for her daughter after that? The favoritism that’d be lavished over the boy and the way the girl would be pushed aside? It would be damaging to both of them, if in different ways. The whole situation is awful. Do they think FIL was going to be reincarnated as the new baby if it was a boy (I could see some of my family thinking this)? That might explain some of their stubbornness and devastation? Though, it would be pretty horrible and sad to think “I’m getting a new grandson, that means my dead husband is coming back as a baby!” So I hope it’s not that. Either way, this family needs grief counseling stat.

OP is totally NTA in the last story, but honestly, I would've gone for this approach to a similar situation I saw once at r/MaliciousCompliance: OP was pregnant with a boy while the entire family insisted the baby was a girl, and they went out of their way to buy dresses, pink clothes and other girl stuff for him. When the boy was born, OP had him wear the clothes she received at family events, just to piss off the family, especially the MIL. When she whined about it, OP just responded "just wait until he's big enough for the dresses."

4th story. I wouldn't blame OP for "letting things get to that point." Far as I can tell from the story, OP repeatedly told her mom to quit it. It was her mom who decided to do that in front of the family and his response probably earned him a lot of credit with the rest of the family. It's mom and sister who are butthurt. Honestly, I think this was better because she got a smack down in front of the WHOLE family, so Mom can't try to twist things with the rest of the family to turn them against OP and her husband. Mom wasn't respecting OP at all and likely would have smeared her and her husband's reputation with the rest of the family if she gave an ultimatum of turning away from the family.

Everyone says it wasn't personal but it still stung. I couldn't go and my one contribution to his funeral wasn't even included. It still stings

Regarding the story of the wife whose mom kept comparing her husband to her ex, I don’t think OP deserves a score. While I agree with your statement about treating OP’s significant other with respect, OP in the story did defend her husband and had consistently told her mom to knock it the hell off. Plus, clearly the husband is trying to have a good relationship with OP’s mom, if he’s still willing to sit in the same room as her, and by the end, both parties were able to throw it back in the mother’s face with the husband giving her a taste of her medicine. Honestly, I don’t think OP did anything wrong. There’s only so much you can do in this scenario, and even if she did give her mother that ultimatum, who’s to say her mom wouldn’t keep comparing the husband to the ex? Honestly, I think the way the husband responded was the only way things could get resolved.

So I remember reading story 3 when it happened, OP ends up clarifying that she is part of an interracial marriage. She is african-american, while her husband and his family are not / the opposite.. so it's a little extra disgusting, cuz not only is the husband in the third story just being awful; he's letting his racist family affect his marriage and his poor wife.

Yes, hello. Im your daily update enjoyer in the comments, here to say that the woman in Story 3 left her husband, because, after pressuring him, she found out his mom didnt like her (partially because of her race, yes) and said to OP's husband to take some time off her with his family ("because here you fit better") She gave him all the time off he needed lol

I can personally relate to the last story. My FIL passed away tragically 2 months before my husband and I got married. My husband is a Junior and his father was a Senior and while his father was alive I told them I wasn't comfortable naming our son to be a Third if we ever had one (there are a lot of legal name confusion that which I wanted to avoid). After FIL passed, I relented and said we would follow the tradition in memory of FIL. Well when we were pregnant with our first we didn't want to know the sex of the baby until delivery day. My MIL was insistent we had a boy to "carry on the name", I loved MIL but she was still grief stricken 4 years later at this point and wanted so desperately to have that grandson. She was in the delivery room with me and my mom and my husband (I swear it was like a three ring circus in there with all the people) and when the doctor said "I can see his head" she started bouncing around the room screaming "It's a boy! It's a boy!" Well, no. My first born was a girl. Thankfully unlike that insano family my MIL very much loved her first granddaughter. She eventually did get to meet her grandson named "the Third" three years later. Sadly MIL passed from cancer 5 years later but at least she got to see the grandson she wanted so much, and doted and loved both her grandchildren equally.

When you told the story bout the "only dads barbecue" it made me so sad... It's one of those little thing that just stays with you. My mom used to work in a company, and her boss was jealous of her. For Christmas day that woman gave a pastry to everyone in the office... except for my mom. I hate when people are being left out :(

Okay for the last story at first I was like okay well its okay to have a bit of sadness about the gender but than the family got worse. You cant just pretend the baby girl is actually a baby boy that's kind of nuts. And the mother is right the baby girl should be celebrated not just shoved aside and forgotten like she's nothing. Like I said having a bit of sadness over the gender is natural but what they are doing is not. Being a bit bummed it's a girl and not a boy would have been okay but to go most of this mom's pregnancy saying her baby Is actually a boy is nuts. They need to stop "hoping" for something that won't happen. That baby is a girl and probably a very beautiful little girl too. They should be celebrating the birth of there grand daughter instead there so focused on the fact its not a boy.... I would be mad to if I was told hey we made you a baby shower for your baby, for me to walk In and see them trying to celebrate an imaginary baby i would have probably been super pissed. They can't just erase the birth of this girl just bc they wanted a boy.

For the wife not invited to half of family dinners- OP posted an update. The mother objected to their relationship from the start, tried to break them up and since they were first introduced encouraged him to "take breaks" from her and suggested the family dinners would be a good excuse to do that . Also OP mentioned that she was half black and when she asked the hubby he more or less admitted his mom might be racist. She also mentioned that he is very reserved but she (the OP) was very outgoing so there is a possibility that maybe MIL just didn't like OP's personality... But she concluded the update saying they were getting a divorce.

@Lilith-Rose

Op says she already tried blocking and reporting but they kept coming back, these people often just make a new account to get around being blocked. Also when it's someone you know irl and are forced to be around like someone on campus rather than just an online harasser it takes things to another level. If blocking and reporting multiple times doesn't make it stop then you have no choice other than taking it further, plus it's super easy to find someone's mom through their Facebook profile and pretty damn effective
