What a great, detailed, review. The best I have seen for a long while and extra kudos for not ruining your presentation with horrible, too loud, obnoxious background music. I’ll definitely be checking out your other videos. And, good choice Rode for recognizing a creator who will accurately review your great products.

Thanks dude! I did have a little bit of gruffness to my voice at the beginning. You can hear it break up a little bit at times especially toward the end of longer sentences haha. Also, that windscreen definitely dulls the highs. My voice was a little more healed in the review section, but also the windscreen being off helped too!

I just bought this mic and I noticed the mic sounds great when you are doing the proximity tests. I'm a 100% beginner to mic's and maybe I'm doing something wrong but while im using audacity (whether on my Mac or PC), I have to speak directly into the mic to hear myself when playing back. I can't be less than 3 inches from the mic because it's playing back very LOW. Not sure if I'm missing something, but I've upped the volume max and done everything I can think of. Maybe I got a fluke.

@@dampy2006 So i did actually swap to the pod mic usb. I did figure out that if you are recording on audacity, you can record and then select your recording and on the effects section, click normalize and that will bring the audio much higher. you can also adjust some settings like the gain in rode connect and test a few times until you get it the way you want it. hope that helps! 👍🏼

Great review! So, you said that the volume knob can be pressed to "mute the microphone" but more research showed that's not correct unless you use Unify. My problem is, I don't want to use Unify. I would rather use WaveLink due to Unify's current restrictions. Do you have pull with Rode? Can you ask them and request that they do a firmware update to allow the OPTION to choose behavior of the knob dialing and it's press within Rode Central software? This way, we can freely choose whether we want the knob to dial in headphone volume (default) or control the gain of the actual mic -- likewise the press of the button to ether mute headphone audio (default) or mute the actual mic. If Rode really wants this new X line to cater toward podcasters and streamers, this should be a no-brainer. And since Rode Central is where you'd update firmware and can also set the mic's on-board DSP as desired, it would make sense to put such an setting option there. Then the mic can freely be used with WaveLink...which would retain the desired on-board processing and desired knob behavior even though not being used in Unify.

@@AudioHotline I received the mic two days ago. Out of the box, the mute function was there, tested it in Discord. That was firmware 1.0.0. Upon installing Rode Central and updating firmware to 1.1.0 (big mistake), they made the behavior to mute only headphone monitoring. So stupid, the functionality is there as long as they write firmware to do so. I'll be writing them a nasty email.

Hmmm, It’s hard for me to not give it at least an 8 when it outperformed all of the mics in this comparison and has an incredible build quality, software and DSP options are solid too. I definitely see what you mean though, especially with the price tag, but I do think people get their moneys worth with this mic… which is crazy because I REALLY didn’t think I would feel that way. $250 for a usb only… is steep. I was trying to decide at what price I would give this a 10…. I think $180.

@audiohotline Do you think this would be worth the money for someone upgrading from a snowball ice or would the q9x be better instead? If I return my focusrite solo and current mic I could afford the XDM-100. Thing is, I tried making the switch to XLR recently but been having issues w/ the focusrite solo where there's a layer of static under my voice no matter what I try (swapped out 2 different XLR cables and about 3 mics and played with gain) so I'm thinking of just going back to USB instead of switching interfaces. Just wanted to know your thoughts if you have any!
@AudioHotline

This mic would just completely blow away the snowball in a comparison… obviously haha it is a lot more expensive too. I am always going to be really partial to XLR mics, BUT if you are all in on USB and you feel like that is going to work better for you, I personally think this is a very great upgrade. However, I do think the Q9X and focusrite combo is a good one. Even the new SE DCM3 or DCM6 would be fantastic too (review coming soon for those). With your focusrite, how much are you turning up the gain? From a noise stand point I feel like the Q9X + Focusrite Solo should be pretty similar to the XDM100. You definitely could have something wrong with your interface… but a lot of people do turn their gain up more than they need to. I was guilty of that when I was getting used to using an interface too (not saying that’s it though). Let me know how much you are turning it up and if you want to send me a sample to my email I could take a listen and see if it’s a problem or just the noise floor and the gain level. Audiohotline@gmail.com If you want to skip the interface though and go USB, XDM-100 is a fantastic choice. If you want a better value, the maono PD400x is solid and quite a bit cheaper.

@@AudioHotline Thanks for your input! I do have the gain set up almost all the way right now so I think that's contributing to the issue. I'll probably send you an audio sample soon for your review since I would really appreciate your opinion! This is my first time trying to EQ and whatnot so it's a bit of a struggle 😅 How soon might the review be for the SE DCM3 or DCM6? I moved to XLR so it'd be more future proof for upgrades so I would love to stick to it. I forgot to mention that I love your videos! @AudioHotline
7 ай бұрын
Based on your needs, I would actually go with the XDM-100. It is going to sound very full on a thinner voice. Also, you can tell it does a great job rejecting room noise by how well it performed in the untreated room test. Additionally, the noise gate has improved over time with firmware updates, so that's another way you can get a sound that is more focused on your voice. Rode's processing and software options are great too! Unify, Connect, and Central are all very user-friendly. A couple more notes based off of what you said: With microphones like this, you want them pretty close to your mouth. Rode recommends 2-6 inches. The thing to do is to find the sweet spot for you and your voice. Usually, I am pretty happy with about 4-5 inches away, but everyone is a little different. When it comes to not capturing your breath as much, and avoiding plosives, it is important to angle the microphone (like I do in this video). One way to look at placement/angle: consider the center of your mouth is 0° and the back of your head 180°, you're going to want the microphone around 45° aimed toward your mouth. A lot of people talk directly into the mic, aimed perfectly in front of their mouth from 2 inches away, and it can often sound like a breathy mess. Hopefully, this helps!

It is very loud when I use jack right on the mic. I also tried it only with usb connected to my phone and jack to mic in different room and it was still there. Is it something this mic does to you to? or it is just my bad luck. Also both of the boxes I bought was very clearly returned before by someone, even tho I bought them as new, maybe because of this issue?
