From Robert Fuchs, an Austrian contemporary composer of Brahms, who was his teacher and mentor, among the many noteworthy compositions, two titles dedicated to the double bass stand out. The three pieces op.96 and the Sonata in Bb major op.97. Not many double bass players know his music and it's a shame because these two works are very well written for the instrument as well as offering a truly remarkable style, compositionally interesting and of great aesthetic taste. It is clear, as in all the music he wrote, the strong influence of Brahms, who always had great esteem for Fuchs and said: "Fuchs is a splendid musician, everything is so beautiful, invented with charm and ability". And we know that Brahms was not given to easy compliments.
The Sonata in B flat major op.97 which follows the Drei Stücke op.96, is further proof of Fuchs' compositional ability who gave the double bass a truly interesting piece, rich in melodic and harmonic ideas which offer the performer the possibility of expressing musicality and artistic maturity.
In this recording a version transposed one tone up is performed, in concert tuning of the double bass (AEBF#).
Robert Fuchs voluntarily renounced fame to live a peaceful life in Vienna, he had illustrious students including G.Mahler, J.Siblius and H.Wolf.
