Thanks for posting this tribute to Bob Newhart. I was lucky to have seen him perform live twice. He knew how to work the audience as a standup comedian. His deadpan reactions to the crazy characters he surrounded with (especially Larry and the two Darryl's on 'Newhart') will be studied by future generations of comedians. A very funny man.

Saw him live! That is too good! I’m sure he came up here to Canada, but maybe I was too young. R.I.P.

I first saw him in Atlantic City in 1992. It was barely two years since the final episode of "Newhart", so he showed a couple of clips from the 1970s show and the final scene of his second hit show. I saw him again about seven or eight years ago in Lancaster, PA. I saw Neil Sedaka two nights later at the same theater in Lancaster.

Thanks for doing a video for Bob. He and Rickles were two of my all time favorites. I’m sure they’re in Heaven with Rickles needling him a little. lol

I love this tribute, thank you so much. I never saw Bob Newhart not hysterical in anything he did. One issue: the original Bob Newhart Show could not have had competition from MASH and The Waltons because they were all three on CBS. I'm surprised you didn't mention his longtime friendship with Don Rickles as well. What a loss to the vanishing art of Comedy. Too many apologies, too few laughs. (Sorry, I hope that comment did not put me in dutch with rules violation. Not my usual role.)

He was one of the greats. There was a sketch about a children's TV host. Richard Pryor confessed to stealing his album. Bob Newhart told him that he got a quarter from each sale. So Pryor gave it to him. The NBC series led to him appearing on one of their anniversary specials. Bill Daily was there too, but for I Dream Of Jeannie. Bob's passing makes Dick Van Dyke the only remaining star of the movie Cold Turkey. Many cast members later worked again for director Norman Lear. A TV Guide article at the time of Newhart's debut had him saying that he considered bringing back his previous sitcom. That makes the finale even more ironic. It was my second guess that Suzanne Pleshette would be in the bed. My first was of Mary Frann in the Japanese getup. The subsequent anniversary special featured the other cast members, along with three brothers. There were also dramatic roles on ER, Desperate Housewives, and NCIS. His book was good. The driving instructor routine was inspired by seeing lots of want ads. That suggested high turnover. At the time he didn't have a driver's license himself.

He was a very funny man, more importantly he was a good man.His assessment of variety shows is not unique among those who did them Captain and Tenille quit their show after one year for the same reason.

This is sad. I like the Newhart show. However, I think I am the one person on the planet that does not like the way the show ended. Now when I watch it, am I watching a show about a Vermont do-it-yourself book writer/innkeeper/talk show host? Or am I watching a show about a Chicago psychologist who is having a dream that he is a writer/innkeeper/talk show host?
