Rest In Piece Mr Perkins. He is one of the main reasons why I keep playing Piano. I am a beginner, I've been playing for about 1 year. I hope to someday soon be as great in Piano as Mr Pinetop Perkins himself. He still lives on in our hearts.

In January of 1977 I had the pleasure of going to a little joint in Charlottesville Virginia called the Mineshaft to see the Muddy Waters band. A friend that played Harp For The Charlottesville Blues All Stars, after a show in Harrisburg VA excitedly told me that the band was going to be opening for Muddy Waters band in 2 weeks and was kind enough to give me two tickets. At that time the Muddy Waters Band, The best band he ever put together consisted of Muddy,of course with Bob Margolin on guitar along with Luther Guitar Johnson. Jerry Portnoy on Harp Calvin Jones on Bass, Willie Big Eyes Smith on Drums and Pinetop Perkins on keys. When the show was over had the pleasure shaking everybody's hand saying hello and of course telling them how cool it was to get to hear them. That would have been an amazing night if that were the way it ended. But that didn't turn out to be the case. My friend and I left the club about 2:00 a.m. and we were starving. We went to the only place that was open, a Dairy Queen. We were sitting in the parking lot eating a burgers when this van pulls up next to us. My friend looks over and says hey I think that's Bob Margolin driving that van. My friend waved Bob and he waved back and about 5 minutes later the sliding door on the van opened and Muddy Willie Smith and Pinetop we're sitting on a bench in the van, Willie holding up a bottle of wine, Pinetop putting his four finger and his thumb up to his lips like smoking a joint and Muddy pointed at us and pointed at Pinetop. We gladly told him that yeah we had a couple of joints and they invited us to come sit in the van with them and for close to an hour we drank wine and smoked pot with the four of them. It was without a doubt one of the most memorable evenings of my life. The three of them were completely down to earth laid back as good of folks as you ever want to meet. And they treated us like friends not strangers. It was amazing.

He used to come in to NUNO’s in Austin, every Tuesday to join my girl’s band. She would let him set up, he would play a bit with the band, and then, it was about thirty minutes of just Pinetop… doing what Pinetop does best. Keyboard cane, Keyboard socks, great piano licks, great sense of humor…. THAT was Pinetop!

I got a chance to see this guy play by accident when traveling with my dad back in 1996. We stopped in a place in Louisiana as we saw some advertising about Piano Tapping Music and my dad told me we could hear the music after checking into a hotel. When going to that place I was thrilled at the lights and the heavy smoke filled room with people aching to watch this man on the Piano. Made the people in that place jump and clap. My dads foot never stopped tapping and I was just amazed anyone could play a Piano to make people whoop and yell for more after each song. Wish we had more people like Pintop Perkins to keep those sounds alive.

Living in the Memphis area and working in the film and video business from the early 80s until the mid 2000s, I was very VERY lucky to meet or work around some great people like him. Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, John Lee Hooker, BB King, Mose Alison, Buddy Guy, Bobby Rush, Junior Kimbrough, RL Burnside, Alex Chilton, U2, 666Mafia (well....). I did lighting and camera work on all kinds of productions. Glad you like it Hangman.

Dr John is the last of the greats that can play the boogie like pinetop, Henry Gray, Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, Clearence "Pinetop" smith Hersal Thomas and a bunch more of other boogie artist. I enjoy listening to him just play. He lets his fingers do the singing instead of his voice
