I had a boss who said that "if you're not 15 minutes early, you're already late" line. During some training they gave us a 10 minute break and he did not appreciate my response that we were all 5 minutes late as soon as the break started . . .

Story 2: The destruction of the saplings is really going to hurt the city's treasury department...as we know Tree Law is rife with high prices for killing trees on other people's property.

I am thinking more of applying pesticides without notification and/or permission. It’s a FIFRA violation and can cause massive liability issues as there needs to be posted notices of no or limited access to the property.

Story 1: Ah, the law of unintended consequences. Story 2: Lots of unfriendly critters like swamp/wetlands/meadowlands/whatever you want to call them... Story 3: IT... one group not to tick off Story 4: Micromanglement Thanks to all 5 OPs and KCC for this one.

Story 2: I hope for an eventual update. That Mayor epically F'ed around and is currently FINDING out. Tree Law and an aggressively Petty Mayor isn't going to end well for that town.

The spraying of the prairie with pesticides may be part of the still going legal process. The land needs to be posted as to the chemical and duration of time of no or limited entry. Was the landowner notified of the application? Who held the pesticide applicator’s license? Anyone that controls the ability to use pesticides would have to have a license, be on site or a phone call away. I was a Federal Regulatory Officer did treatments, trained and certified equipment, I had a certification that I had to renew on periodic basis, no exceptions. FIFRA, the overarching law that controls pesticides as strong controls. For instance, the label on a pesticide even bought for home use from a store is a LEGAL document. No deviation from concentrations is allowed, cautions on use during to physical, environmental and weather conditions (wind speed- drift hazard) are listed.

Story 4: I've been dieing to do something similar at my job. We're not allowed to clock in more then 5 minuted before a shift but if you clock in even 1 minute after your start time, the system marks you late. Which it's understandable, i guess. The kicker is the powers on high demand we clock out EXACTLY at our end time. With how much we in the front end need to do ( count out our draws, empty trash for your shift, count out safe if you're clocking in,... ect) and god forbid you have a line of customers. I've been yelled at by a manger a few times because I'll have a line and unble to clock out. Even gotten a few threats of write ups for time theift. Which i get if it wasn't for the fact I'm literally stuck doing my job until my "relief" clocks in and sets up their draw.

My old company seemed to think of IT as a cost center, a part of the company that costs money but doesn't make money, like sales. And it was sort of right that our IBM Mainframes did cost money (and lots of it). Unfortunately, IBM Mainframes might be an exception to IT areas that are easy to just go out and find a job.

As to the time thing. I worked at a place that gave you a 5 minute grace period. So say your start time was 9:00am. If you got there by 9:05am you were still considered ON TIME. We were berated for this numerus times but I pointed it out that this was company policy. Strangely the never changed that policy. They just prefered to biatch about it. So I kept letting them and kept punching in at 9:05am. Going so far as to wait by the time clock til it hit that magic 9:05am. The other solution they tried was moving the time clocks away from the entry door to next to the floor managers work station. Didn't work. 9:05am.

Story 1: It might just simply be the head honcho is one of those folks who is so by the book it hurts. Story 2: sounds like someone living close by did not like the landscaping and had a friend in city hall they called in a favor with to get rid of it even if it wasn't actually the mayor as the story implies. Story 3: Sounds like a clear case of management trying to prove it is needed. Story 4: Mirco managing jerk.
