My house has a "covenant" on the deed -- which effectively is a set of restrictions, and as far as I can tell, pre-dated the concept of HOAs. The neighborhood Karen wanted to control how tall the grass was on everyone's lawns, hire a landscaper to enforce it, and then bill the home-owners for the work. After I pointed out that there was nothing in the covenant granting us such authority, she backed down. Turns out what is in the covenant is "no commercial activity". Three guesses who is running an Air-B-and-B on her property.

Story 2, micromanager: I had a job with a serious micromanager. For example, upon logging in on Monday at 7am, I was replying to an email of hers. While composing the response (2 minutes), I got an instant message from her with the same question. While cutting and pasting my response from email to the IM app, the phone rang. I got back at her by 'accidentally' doing a reply-all to a teamwide email asking her to please stop micromanaging. Another micromanager: once driving home I got a page with 911 appended on the number indicating an emergency; this was in the 90s. 2 minutes later, I got home and called back. No answer. Left a message with my home phone number. Got a call back about an hour later; guy had no idea what I was talking about. I was about to apologize for the wrong number when he interrupted me saying that he got 5 such calls. She had gone to some random desk, starting paging people, then after a few minutes walked off. I never found out what she wanted. With micromanagers, they have no short-term memory, no sense of proportion and everything is here and now, an emergency.

Another good way they could have gone with the first story, I have it put in the minutes of the meeting officially that she requested that whatever pedophile is taking pictures of her minor son and his friends please stop. I'm so glad the home I grew up in wasn't in an HOA. We did have one nosy neighbor who resulted in us not being able to have our basketball hoop on our curb facing the street, but that's because she went to the town about it. My aunt lives in an HOA-ran neighborhood, and one rule is that they can't have cars parked on the street. Luckily she has a decent driveway and garage, but still.

I bought in an HOA (fortunately one of the rare good ones) because prior neighborhood had a mixture of homes that were perfectly maintained with good curb appeal while others were complete wrecks and eye soars (broken cars in the front lawn next to a broken washing machine, grass 3 fee high, house in dilapidated condition). The bad houses hurt the value of the well-maintained ones. I have been very fortunate to have a really good and not at all intrusive HOA.

Yeaaaah so the US is covered in neighborhoods with HOAs, it's super difficult to find a house within a neighborhood that doesn't have one. When we built out house we were told the neighborhood would have an HOA but it wouldn't be active for several years. In all honestly though, ours isn't bad. If we wanted something we would ask the builder and they would approve, even though said thing (such as a yard barn, for example) was not allowed according to the by laws. Nothing could be done because the builder approved and that was it. Apparently some were against freaking solar panels as well!!! It made my heart happy when I noticed a couple houses having them installed. hahaha! Whoever made up the rules for this HOA was stupid anyway. No one cares about them and the notes and such are sent but that's about it. Thankfully we don't have stupid rules to abide by. We've been here for 11 years, but I suppose that could still change. We've also lucked out and had great neighbors so far. We've only had new ones on one side a couple times. Haven't met the current one, so cross your fingers for us! Met her parents and they seem nice! :)

While I've never shopped for a home in the USA (I'm Canadian), it looks to me like it's VERY hard to find a reasonably priced home that isn't in an HOA and if you DO find a Non-HOA home that's reasonably Priced, it's usually in either a high-crime slum neighbourhood or WAAAAAY out in the sticks making even a simple trip to the nearest store for milk and munchies a 20 minute one-way drive... Most of the Non-HOA homes within the City tend to be EXTREMELY expensive (if only because they're not in an HOA)...

Indeed. Our search last year resulted in finding the one house on the market that best met our needs (multi-generational household to keep elderly parents out of the assisted-living/nursing-home/funeral home pipeline) was in a small (about twenty houses) HOA. The guy in charge of the HOA was fine with us building the fence we wanted, and a couple other things I asked about, but couldn't produce the CC&R documents for some reason. The primary function of this HOA as he described it was to keep electricity to the street lights in the cul-de-sac and maintain the "pretty" entrance. A week after we moved in, he moved out, and there was a new head of the HOA. I explained the prior agreement on the fence, and she somewhat ruefully agreed. In the HOA meeting a week later, there was apparently some discussion that I should not be allowed my fence because of the CC&R wording, but she backed up my position. Happily, she has not given me any grief about other things. Maybe she has forgotten about them...

HOA: cities demand them to be set up. and there is virtually nothing on the market without an HOA. a thing that is quite ironic: HOAs are meant to preserve and raise the value of the buildings of the homeowners. but many HOAs are in itself so repulsive that potential buyers shy away from participating in an HOA. therefor, property value in an HOA should be lower than property value outside. and watch the piece john oliver did on HOAs. it's pretty hefty.

communities with HOAs can be good, so long as the enforcement actions are reasonable. For the HOA community I lived in, the HOA performs contract trash removal, maintenance of roads, and ensuring the homeowner maintains the property. the horror stories I have seen are where the property management company (PMC) looks for or creates issues to generate revenue for the HOA (probably as the PMC gets a percentage or fee is contingency based) or some arse on the HOA board wants the creatively interpret use the rules to ensure 'their vision' for the community.

We moved into a house in an HOA community back in 2021. While some of them can be extremely bad the worst ours has done to us was send us a citation for not mowing the lawn in over a week (yes the grass got tall) we had gotten Covid so no one in the house had the energy to mow it back then. That’s been the only thing that happened to us in our HOA. I can’t say the same for other people here.

I have an HOA because nearly every house within a 45 min drive of where I work has an HOA. Avoiding HOA's would mean eliminating more than 90% choices from the local the housing market and the last 10% is split between bad options and over priced due to how much people are willing to spend to not have an HOA. Having the common areas maintained is nice, but I'd be happy if HOA's were immediately banned tomorrow.

Why so many HOA's? Because local governments love them! Less policing for things other than genuine emergencies, i.e. code violations, etc. It's to the point that most new developments are required to have HOA's established. Developers love them because the rules _they_ establish keep everything (grass trimmed, paint colors, gardening choices, cars in driveway, etc.) consistent and make selling the remaining lots/homes at the full, planned price, easier.

The concept of an hoa is a good one, intended to ensure a neighbor couldn't ruin a neighborhood with ugly or outrageous actions/neglect on their property. However, too often hoa's become the havens of small-minded, power-mad idiots who think it is their job to mind everyone else's business. My sister recently bought a home in an hoa community that is doing it the right way. With a very large population and a 40 year history to back it up, she was willing to take the risk and they have been great to work with, even allowing for reasonable exceptions to certain rules. Their fees go to actual community upkeep and their books are open for inspection at any time.

I bought a house, no HAO shown in the contract, and didn't find out about the HOA till I had lived there for over a year and was past due on my fees. They demanded the fees, and when asked who they are (while cleaning my guns, in my garage mind you) they back tracked real quick and explained the previous owners had bought out and we had to pay in. Asked for the rules and found out if they waited another month we could have told them to pound sand. They didn't inform us of these fees in a timely manner. On the plus side, they aren't that much and only cover snow removal during winter. I don't like them, but they leave me alone for the most part. Aside from things I know better than and was doing a project. Trailer in the grass for 2 months.

Lived in an HOA for 34 years. Yes, there were some rules and a few things went wonky, like they made my neighbor tear down a shed that wasn't bothering anyone and was well kept up. Most of the frustration came when they actually stopped enforcing the rules. The HOA didn't have enough money to hire an attorney to fight those coming in and violating the building rules. We moved to a new house, also with an HOA. But the dues are reasonable, they have income from renting spots to store boats in the winter on the HOA park we have, which allows those members without lakefront property an access point to the lake, with a swim area, boat slips that can be rented by the season and a few seasonal activities, including a big fireworks display for the 4th of July. The focus of the HOA is having fun, not being rule enforcers. Oh, yeah, the entire set of rules is only four pages and two of them deal with the minimum size of house that can be built. They didn't want any 'weekend cabins' so the homes are pretty nice.

There definitely are many cons to HOAS, especially those that go on power trips. However, most do enforce standards of upkeep which prevents neighbors or others in the area from driving down market value due to negligence or unsightly alterations. I personally won't deal with any HOA unless the payments are strictly for them providing miscellaneous services like trash removal, local park upkeep and so forth. Any bylaws covering what I'm allowed to do with the home I pay for is double middle fingers and a no 😂
