International Translation Day 2021:
Rónán Hession on Twentieth Century Japanese Writers
Rónán Hession, author of Leonard and Hungry Paul, joins Literature Ireland for a talk to celebrate International Translation Day. Rónán will discuss the works of Japanese writers in translation, including female Japanese writers who are largely overlooked in the west, and how his reading of these works has influenced his own practice.
The books discussed and recommended by Rónán are:
Botchan by Natsume Soseki, translated by J Cohn
No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai translated by Donald Keene
The Master of Go by Yasunari Kawabata translated by Edward G Seidensticker
Child of Fortune by Yuko Tsushima translated by Geraldine Harcourt
Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto translated by Megan Backus
Strange Weather in Tokyo by Hiromi Kawakami translated by Allison Markin Powell
