Thanks for the explanation. For those of us that need the extra tutorial, a really good view of the fasteners/bolts position and mention the size of the tools that you are working with would be very helpful. In addition, when you removed the air filter cover, you didn't show the actual removal. You only showed the last little part. I found that I had to bend back the fuel tank side covers quite a bit to remove the air filter cover. Showing these steps in full really helps us do it yourself guys that don't work on bikes that often. I live in a very hot climate and I find that BMW doesn't really do a great job of making resilient plastic parts. A lot of the little wire bundlers snap when they get removed. This is from plastic fatigue in the sun and heat. It has made me overly cautious on pulling on BMW plastic parts. I figure they'll just crumble to bits.

Well done guys for the good job that you do and the info you provide! Just one small correction here! It doesn't matter what each company recommends for the oil viscosity!!! The only that matters is the environment temperature that you try to start your engine on! So, it matters the temperature difference between the environment and the engine and the oil's ability (due to temperature difference) to lubricate the engine correctly on cold start and continues to lubricate correctly when the temperature is increasing. That's why each company recommends a different oil viscosity according the importation country! ;)

hot tip. fill oil filter before you put it on. let it soak in. then put on.

In a horizontal mount filter, PARTIALLY fill the filter with oil just enough so that when installed it does NOT purge and rotate to adequately saturate the media inside throughout, then install. This critically reduces the time gap - typically about 10-15 seconds of the engine running dry. On vertical mount application engines of any application you have the benefit of nearly fully filling the filter before installation. Dry running ain't a good thing.

Brother , Try starting up the engine for 2 min and then remove the oil plug . The viscosity level would reduce and almost all the residue will come out. The drain oil would be hot and use hand protection.

The engine was stopped a few minutes before we start filming. The temperature was around 50 degrees Celsius when we opened the drain plug.

Would BMW void their warranty if we change the engine oil on a new bike that's under warranty?!?

No. Just make certain the chosen oil meets or exceeds specification and document.

Fully synthetic ? .... or semi- synthetic? .... Fully can result in clutch slip, I used fully in my old GS as they had a dry clutch ... but all my other bikes have been semi-synthetic ..

You don't know for sure the amount of oil ??? WTF?!? yes you do BMW tells you its 4 liters!! you can check it fine, but dont say that you "don't know", that's a plain stupid statement.

31acruz You never know for certain exactly how much oil to refill as you don't know exactly how much oil came out of the motor and how much is left in the old oil filter. That is what they mean.
