poor thing, i felt so bad for it, rabies is horrible. We've had rabies alerts in our city, it seems to be making a comeback

Back from 1999-2001 I used to be a nuisance wildlife contractor with the state of NY, and we had to work with our local health department any time certain animals were mention, raccoons, bats and skunks. Now the number one animal where I am that has rabies is the grey fox, far and away the leader. We're actually seeing for the first time ever in the last couple of years, rabid woodchucks, one even attacked a woman in her yard. Rabies is NOT something to mess with, the shots are not fun. Also, what I recall from talking to our local health department, is that raccoons can carry rabies for 12 weeks before showing signs of it. We had a few years back someone in our local hospital who died from rabies, it was the first case of a human getting it in 20 plus years. It's not a pleasant death for animals nor people. Far too many people think that they know wildlife or have the misguided need to help an animal they have no training or equipment to deal with.

Poor thing. Glad you all were able to stay safe. Was it too late to reverse the effects of rabies in the raccoon 🦝?

Same here, so sad that that another life was lost due to this deadly disease. Back in the 70s my aunt had a dachshund that was infected with rabies and she didn’t know a lot about it herself so she decided to treat the dog at home by herself , when the animal’s condition deteriorated she put the dog in a pet taxi and took him to the vets only to be told that he was getting put down because he had rabies my aunt looked confused at first and told them that the dog wasn’t rabid it was just sick and it had eaten something that made it sick and she was treating it at home and that it was gonna get better and said the only reason she brought him here was to get some antibiotics and go home. The vets assured her that her dog wasn’t coming home because There’s no coming back from rabies once symptoms show. My aunt of course was heartbroken when she heard that and after they took her dog to the back room and had it euthanized they told my aunt to go get treatment right away and my aunt asked why ? They find her because your dogs contagious at that stage and your exposed and if you don’t get the treatment then you will die. She did what the vets instructed her to do and she’s alive today because of it. You see back then they did the shots very differently than they do today. She had to get them directly into the stomach every time they were due and she had to finish the entire course of those shots too. Each jab went directly into her intestines and she said it hurt like a motherfucker she admitted later that she wished she had known about rabies sooner, her dog would still be alive today back then if she had known what to do about it. She says even today 60 years later she wouldn’t wish her experiences on anyone she still remembers her experience with that very well. Every single moment exactly how it played out to how it ended she remembers everything

No, unfortunately, they have to euthanize the animal to test it. Once it was handed over to the other rehab, they handled everything through SC DHEC and notified me. I am just glad I was able to intervene and make sure the elderly lady did not get bit!
