What purpose does smoking the hides serve if the hides were tanned first?

Yes I caught all the Raccoons myself I have all the footage on my other videos in my channel, I caught 25 in total that was my goal because I mainly had this project in mind for them, I was a few raccoon short being that this is the first time I make a quilt but luckily a good friend donated some raccoons so I can complete it, This year i'm going to try and catch as many as possible to make a few to sell, This was mainly a trial and error for me now I gotten a feel to what to do and what not to do, I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

Wow how long did it take you to catch so many, more than one year? It's really cool to watch how you do it , especially when you consider blankets like that made of real fur sell for 2-5000 $ , they are super expensive but with time you'll have something way more enjoyable and personal. Might you make a video on how you trap them and the beginning process of before the first video? You know what I mean , how to skin them and prepare them for the tanning phase, maybe this year when you first get one or something? I'd like to try and do one of these, or maybe look for a coat pattern.

Trapping season here in PA is about 4 months that's about the time it took me to catch them all, In my previous trapping videos in episode 6 and 7 I have time lapse videos towards the ending showing how I skin them, But that sounds like a good Idea, next month is the beginning of trapping season ill make a few videos of the sets that I put out and how I prep them for tanning. try making your own at the end it'll be worth it and you'll have more appreciation for it since you will know how much work you put into getting it done.

Cool video. are those hides water proof or would you need to smoke them first?

I would have to smoke them first to make them water proof, I'm going to smoke the quilt once its all put together right before I add the cotton liner to the skin side.

do you ever have any problems with your furs smelling or getting mildew ?
@HRuiz139
7 жыл бұрын
No not at all, the only time the fur has a odor is when I first get them which is the animals natural smell but after the pickling and the first wash most of the smell goes away, after its all dry I smoke the fur and give it another wash by then the fur is water proof and stays pliable when washed, I've never gotten mildew on them either.

excellent teaching videos I missed where you used the tanning solution?
@HRuiz139

I didn't record the footage adding the tanning oil to the hide, I used the oil in the first video while the furs are in the drying process I added the oil to the skin side giving it time to sink in while the fur is drying. After the fur side is dry I turned the hide inside allowing the skin side to dry, before the skin side is completely dry I work and stretch the hide making the skin side white while working the hide the oils seep into the skin allowing it to stay soft and supple. Thank you for noticing that.
