The racehorse helmet camera mount captures us training these thoroughbred racehorses cross country. These horses sometimes train 4 - 5 miles for about 45 minutes. This distance includes mixture of walking, jogging/trotting, and galloping at a 3 minute per mile, pace. Two to three days a week include some uphill sprints which reach about 30 miles an hour. For those who don't know racing, we call those two minute licks because the galloping pace equals a mile in about 2 minutes. Keep in mind that this training is all done on a natural surface. Training this way on a dirt racetrack is not recommended. Our workout speeds generally are kept in the 12.5-13 second per furlong pace. Although some get away from the riders from time to time and our better horses stick closer to a 12 sec furlong. This can all depend on trainer preference, but when a horse is asked to go all out, like in the two year old in training sales, the risk of injury much higher. These thoroughbred racehorses get one day, a week, off and go on an easy trail ride to keep their minds in check on a second day. This is at the farm where breaking and bringing horses back from lay up is done before returning back to the track. We have some of horses, with the Sony HDR AS-15 helmet camera, on a trail ride posted, so check them out if you like a slower pace.
So back to the 2 year old in training sales... The racehorse sales held in Ocala Florida (OBS) are ridiculous and if you buy a horse from one of these sales, don't be surprised when the comes up crippled, a few days later. My friend bought one and it turned out to have a bone fracture. He paid 10k and it never raced. The problem with these racehorse sales is that breeders are rushing to make the 2 YO sale deadline and the trainers and riders are pressured to push these horses to their limits. Racehorses that are pushed to their limits don't have a good chance of ending their racing career sound. Properly training two year old horses for a racing career is actually better for them than waiting until they are older. Studies have proven that training horses younger, actually promotes stronger bone and joint adaptation along with soft tissue strength. This training prepares them for the higher speeds they will have to endure in their racing career. This said, the speed has to be under total control and relative to the age and maturity of the race horse. This video is about the Sony HDR AS-15 jockey cam and GoPro Hero 3, but I can't help to speak on the subject of racing. My rule is,a yearling racehorse should never go faster than a 2 minute lick or 30 mph and no further than a furlong (1/8 mile or 200 meters). Pushing two year old horses to maximum speeds without proper conditioning is usually going to get your thoroughbred horse an early retirement. A racehorse's maximum speed should only occur in a race and even then, the horse most likely will weaken before the wire if he doesn't run at sub maximum speed to sustain endurance. This of course if he is evenly matched. A well trained race horse, with a smart jockey, will be able to keep a horse at a pace where he will finish strong.
Sorry to go off on a tangent, but their are too many misinformed people who criticize racing two year olds simply because of the horse's age. These people, like PETA, are not educated in equine exercise physiology, so they should not be speaking on a subject without evidence supporting their claims. The problem with two year old horse racing is with the trainers and breeders who rush their racehorses and train speed to early and too fast.
Using these action cams on things like cars or motorcycles gives you an advantage of being on a smooth road and of course having shock absorbers. Obviously there are no shock absorbers to help stabilize the video on these thoroughbred race horses. The Sony HDR AS15 also has better picture stability than the GoPro Hero 3. The GoPro has more settings with higher resolution for big screen movie productions and does produce a great picture. For the money and overall video quality, I love this Sony HDR AS-15 action camera and works great as helmet cams on racehorses.
